Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

500 ml bottle, served in an Erdinger glass at Resi’s Bierstube in Chicago. Deep chocolate color, creamy lasting head...thick bananas and caramel and a touch of baker’s chocolate in the nose...solid fruity body with underlying cooked cloves...carbonation a bit too heavy and body is a bit thin...late hints of tarragon are odd but don’t detract much.

Aroma of toasted malt, chocolate, and perhaps banana. Almost opaque brown color with a beige head. Rather thin bodied. The carbonation has some bite. The flavors are toasted malt, chocolate, and arguably some coriander. The finish is smooth, toasted malt, and light bitter. After a bit some spiciness, like dilute clove, erupts in the mouth. Apparently it needs to be warmer than frig temperature, as banana also comes out after awhile. Complexity develops.

Found this at a grocery store. Very surprised. Very dark, muddy color out of the bottle with a huge, thick white head. Aroma of bubblegum and hay. Taste is bubblegum and white bread. Something just isn’t quite right, but I can’t put my finger on it. An aftertaste like dirt in the mouth. Thin mouthfeel and lots of carbonation. Not a great dunkel, but ok.

Roasty dark fruit and banana aroma. Opaque brown with thin, tan head that recedes to ring. Flavour is mostly roasty with a slight sweetness but none of the fruitiness suggested by the aroma. Nice medium-full wheat mouthfeel and strong carbonation. Bottle enjoyed with MartinT and Rastacouere.

Murky deep brown with very fluffy off-white head and above average lace. The aroma hints of roasted caramel malts, current, banana, wheaty and zesty yeast esters, floral hops, allspice, a touch earthy as well. The taste starts malty and earthy with lots of yeasty characters too. The fruit is subdued as is most spicy notes found in most hefes but still able to be found as an undertone. The primary flavors are much more like that of a dunkel. Good caramel and mocha tastes in the midsection. The finish is earthy and woody dry. The mouthfeel is thin and lively enough but is not watery. Good hybrid that is not really great at any one thing, but solid across the board.

Dark brown fizzes on pour but not too fizzy, nice balanced malt, with a little sweetness and bitter in linger
