Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Pretty good, although not nearly as flavorful as Franziskaner or Paulaner’s dunkels. Still it was quite nice with the typical flavor of a dunkelweizen, although slightly toned down.

I can’t believe I haven’t rated this yet. I used to drink this when I lived in NC 11 yrs ago. I didn’t have it again until last week. Nice rich malty dunkel with a respectable dry finish. Not too sweet like many other dark lagers.

light malty taste,a little sour finish, I think this is the best of Erdinger.

On Draught: The bartender took his time and poured this one slowly with perfect head. Quite dark, almost mahogany colored and off white mountain of suds. Smell of caramel and a little sweet. Very smooth on the palate withy a buttery creamy texture. Taste is a litle spicy, slightly bitter and nicely rounded out.

Murky deep brown with very fluffy off-white head and above average lace. The aroma hints of roasted caramel malts, current, banana, wheaty and zesty yeast esters, floral hops, allspice, a touch earthy as well. The taste starts malty and earthy with lots of yeasty characters too. The fruit is subdued as is most spicy notes found in most hefes but still able to be found as an undertone. The primary flavors are much more like that of a dunkel. Good caramel and mocha tastes in the midsection. The finish is earthy and woody dry. The mouthfeel is thin and lively enough but is not watery. Good hybrid that is not really great at any one thing, but solid across the board.

aroma of smoke, bacon, wheat, mustiness, sweet fruit. very dark body, big bone white head that diminishes airy then into a nice ring around the glass with some lace as well. anyway. fizzy, prickly, and quite good. i like it. primarily a smokey wheat with a little bit of fruit. i enjoyed this.
