Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Pours black, somewhat coke-like, with caramel edges, very promising appearance. Aroma reveals the predominant coffee taste, had this a bit colder than preferable so couldn’t smell much. Palate is smooth, low carbonation, could be a tad more consistent. Taste is dominated by coffee with hints of caramel and toasted malt, very easygoing and refreshing beer. Somewhat one-dimensional, but still a very respectable weizendunkel.

Shared by Fidel, pours deep brown with finger thick frothy head. The nose is sweet and a bit of cola and prunes. The flavor is much the same, with a bit of a sweet fruit tang. Medium-full mouthfeel.

Poured a really foamy head and really dark looking. Hard to see if it was cloudy as its so dark but finally was able to see it. Nice toasty malt aroma. Light toasty taste reminiscent of well done toast. High carbonation feel on the palate but surprisingly light. Very drinkable and worthy of future purchases.

Had at the brewery outlet in Munich, and enjoyed every sip. Tried next to the regular (hellas) weiss bier, and might have liked this one better but I think that is due to mood. Really it’s just a good fresh Bavarian beer.

And I am the second. This was a very good beer. I am surprised it wasn’t already on here.

On tap at the Loreeley a biergarten on Rivington St NYC. I enjoyed the weisen meets dark malt that poured an average head. Cloudy body released roasted grain taste. Body was medium and provided a moderate sweet and bitter combo.

Soul Cafe, Budapest. Very dark brown colour with a large off white creamyish head. Looked the part. Aroma was brown sugar, malt and some dark fruit. Flavour was pretty malty with some sweetness. Balance was ok. Not bad, just not earth shattering. Probably the best beer of the trip, which isn’t saying much.

Pours cloudy reddish brown. The aroma is cream, roasty dark malts, and a small amount of typical hefe mixed with a dash of metal. The aroma reminds me a bit of a schwarzbier. The flavor is sweet malt, a bit of metal, and a little hefe but not much.
