Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Malty and faintly musty aroma, with some faint toffee and doughy yeast. Dark, opaque brownish-amber appearance, with creamy and lasting off-white foam atop. Lightly sweet profile, some caramel, toffee and bready malt combined with lightly slicy, herbal hop flavors but low overall bitterness. Low-moderate acidity. Light-medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Good drinkability.

Nice wheat and yeast flavor starts out. The finish is thin and mostly just alcohol flavor.

Aroma of toasted malt, chocolate, and perhaps banana. Almost opaque brown color with a beige head. Rather thin bodied. The carbonation has some bite. The flavors are toasted malt, chocolate, and arguably some coriander. The finish is smooth, toasted malt, and light bitter. After a bit some spiciness, like dilute clove, erupts in the mouth. Apparently it needs to be warmer than frig temperature, as banana also comes out after awhile. Complexity develops.

500 ml bottle. Throws a tall white head. Greyish black. Bready and yeasty aroma. Dryish, not at all sweet, aroma. Subdued black roasted malts come out soft and gentle. No hints of harsh acrid burnt malts at all. Palate is clean, clearly helped by the high carbonation level. Smooth mouthfeel that is only interrupted by the tickling from carbonation. Not at all a complex beer, but is a nice alternative to their ordinary hefe-weizen.

(Rating #1478)

Re-rate: Gentle sweet toasty aroma with some spice and herbal notes. Poures quite dark with an off white head looking quite good. Toasty malty notes with a hint of wheat. Spicy fruity hops that give a nice clean palate to a brew that otherwise has a fair amount of carbonation.

Had this in Croatia with cevape. It definetely wasn't strong enough to go with the meat and onions, but I enjoyed the somewhat chocolately flavors after I was done eating.
