Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Definitely dunkel with tan foam, Dark but not burnt caramel flavor, slight sourness, dark cocoa of course, moderat traces of cola and soap. Supremely adequate dunkel weissbier.

RE-RATE: Draught at Bier Markt. I had a pint from supposedly the first keg of this beer ever available in Canada - we’ve only had it in bottles previously. Appearance is the same as as the bottled version, but both aroma and flavour are better, holding a nice tart/tangy note that I never got from the bottles. Probably a question of age - this was presumably much fresher beer. Still a bit dead in the finish, but all in all, quite an improvment.

Original rating: Bottle from LCBO giftpack. Nice dark ruby-brown with a large tan head. Very subdued aroma of malt with a faint spiciness. Thin body. Light flavour, again with faint malts, a bit of earthiness, and not much else. As a fan of Aventinus, I was hoping for something similar here, but it was sorely lacking the spicey & yeasty character I was hoping for. Quite disappointing. [5/4/5/2/10]

Bottled. Dark mahogany with an amazingly steady head. Banana nose. Flavour is rich and when it warms up I find sweet malt, banana and toffee. Dark malt is apparent. Medium-fullbodied.

Large tan head with little lacing atop a deep brown body, Moderately sweet, slightly metallic, roasted malt aroma. Taste was soft fruit, molassas and caramel malts. The wheat flavor was well concealed. Semi-dry, lingering, almost cloying, finish.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark dunkel with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with light caramel and light banana aftertaste. Taste is mostly dominated by some roasted malt with a light bitter finish and some light fruity notes also noticeable. Average body with good carbonation. OK but again a style that really doesn’t appeal to me that much.

Bottle into small plastic tasting cup, Humulus Lupus @ Jak’s Tap (Chicago). Didn’t smell like a weiss, rather malty. Creamy head and brown in the cup. Tasted like an oatmeal stout, but lighter: nicely sweet with a little bit of soft hops. Creamy and soft in the mouth. I liked it.

08.16.05 500ml bottle dated 07-2005. Dark fudgie brown, clouded, under pillowy mound of tan foam. Aroma is dark pretzels, salted, with plum sauce and old leaves. There’s a subtle underlying spice that coats the air, but only in a way reminiscent of a kitchen the evening after baking. Flavors are bready, too, with a toasted crust flavor and mild salt. Underpinnings of banana, cocoa, and wine cork are nice touches. The finish is all mineral with some mint and chalk. Quite dry.

Weizens are a style of beer that looses flavor quickly after production. Mine had hints of what it might have been fresh. The maltiness and creamy body come through with just the right sweetness to let you know there was a real good weizen in this bottle just a little while ago. Worth a re-rate if I can find it fresh.
