Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Bottle - chocolate malt aroma. Dark brown and cloudy appearance. Malt and coffee taste - not overpowering, very pleasant. A light dunkel but very nice.

beautiful opaque color ... firm head ... smell of bananas, mango slightly tainted by a hint of detergent ... the taste is buttery, fruity, a slight bitterness, which is not too well integrated ... quite a good beer, which could become a truly great beer with a bit of improvement in the brewhouse ....

A refreshing beer, which got to be tried in an original Weizen glass. Full bodied, but yet still a refreshing enjoyment to drink in summer

Ok, the standard Erdinger Weiss wasn’t impressive. However, this one didn’t disappoint and may be my favorite dunkel weizen. Poured a flat dark brown color with a huge head that provided the best possible lacing. Aroma had bananas and light spicing detectable. The flavor followed, but was slightly roasted and caramel-like (much less so than other dunkel weizens, and certainly not as "dry"). This had a sweetness that exceed that of other dunkels I’ve had. Mouthfeel was moderate and this one was pretty drinkable for a weizen. Somewhat dry finish.

500ml bottle.
Pours a deep brown with red-brown highlights. Has a good sized foamy light brown head. Smells bready with caramel, toffee malts and light fruit. Small amount of hop character. Flavour is similar. Sweet and caramely, finishing on earthy hops, dark chocolate and brown sugar. Pretty darn good but I’m quite the dark beer fan.

In direct contrast to the hefeweiss by this brewer - which I dont rate highly - this beer was much better. The dark colour hinted at the rich flavour to come, and the complex of fruit and maltiness made for a very pleasant beer, and a fine example of the dunkel style.

50cl bottle poured into a weizen glass. Beautiful brown color with an inch and a half of slow-dissipating frothy head. Very malty, fruity weizen aroma. Tastes a lot like the regular Erdinger but better. Hints of chocolate and nuts. Very smooth palate.
