agillespie81 (101), Denver, Colorado, USA Mar 21, 2008 Black in color......opaque. An almost nonexistent head. Complex aroma with varying roasted and sweet notes. Slightly sweet malt taste up front......fairly smooth mouthfeel with a hint of crispness. Finishes with a basic malt back.
esjaygee (733), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Sep 1, 2008 Alas, a dark beer from Estes Park… hope… uh, no. Gusher of a bottle… Brown with a mammoth tan head. Aroma of grain, sweet malt, chocolate, tree bark and a something sour. Body is chewy, dusty and astringent with mild notes of chocolate and malt. Perhaps this bottle was a touch old, however I’m sure this wouldn’t be that good straight from the tap. Beaver (475), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jan 4, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin light tan head that quickly diminishes to a thin collar.
The aroma is sweet lactic chocolate with some acidic roasted malts and coffee.
The flavor is sweet lactic chocolate and nuts with some astringent roasted malts and coffee. The finish has enough bitterness for good balance. The mouthfeel is medium and watery with almost no carbonation (seems to be common of EP beers).
Overall, a pretty decent and under-rated porter. If it was a little less watery (and thus subdued) and less acidic, this would be really good.
gws57 (990), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA Sep 8, 2007 Got this one bottled, thanks Slothgar! Very dark brown, opaque pour with a scant, tan head. Strong alcoholic nose with some coffee bitterness, bitter cherries, raisins, and scotch. Complex and nuanced. Milky mouthfeel, but a timid finish. Not spectacular, especially for the style, but drinkable. I’d have it again. zeke626 (215), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Aug 16, 2007 Bottle, poured a deep opaque brown with very little head. Aroma is a bit weak, but is mainly toasted malt and cocoa. Body is kind of weak with light malt/chocolate flavors. Most of the flavor comes on the front of the palate and the finish is watery. Slight coffee aftertaste.
