Commercial Description:
Our commemorative ale honors Samson the elk. This is an oatmeal stout that is full-bodied with a wonderful roasted flavor and just a touch of sweetness. We use galena and goldings hops. Alc / vol 5 %

12oz, no date. Pours thick with a very deep mahogany--black in the glass--and a very small brown head. Main aromas are very roasty malts and coffee. Also some char and a small amount of molasses. Flavor had a little bit of acidity in addition to the big roasted malts (not really coffee anymore), never really getting sweet, only mildly bitter towards and in the finish. Mouthfeel not as thick as the pour--light-medium body (a bit of a letdown), minimal carbonation. Dunno where the oatmeal went for the smooth body and sweet taste, but I couldn’t find it. After the aroma and appearance, this beer was a letdown.

[Colorado Road Trip – 2006] A dark black nectar this was a great stout. Did get a hint of some burnt malts but his was nothing compared to the great flavor. Good Job Estes Park…

Poured a black color with a brown head. Aroma was typical of a stout with nice malts with subtle hints of grain. The flavor was very nice with the right amount of sweetness and malts.

Sample draught at the brewery. Beer was a very dark brown and nearly opaque with a tiny light brown, frothy, mostly diminishing head. The aroma was malty with moderate-to-heavy notes of roasted grain, chocolate, light note of molasses; Hoppy with a moderate herb note; Light moderate note of brine. The flavor was moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter with a long, moderately bitter/grippy, lightly sweet, trace astringent finish. The body was medium, the texture was watery and the carbonation was average.

Pours to a pitch black color with a dark tan head of medium thickness. The body of this is very thick, almost like pouring used motor oil. Aroma is malty chocolate, and the flavor is a malty sweet mix of choclate and toffee. A good, tasty beer, although it would be better suited to a cool fall night than tonite’s 90+ degree weather.

black pour, thin head. coffee grind aroma. coffee, chocolate taste. a little watered down and too much coffee grind in the finish. that being said it wasn’t that bad.

A terrific everyday stout (that I unfortunately can’t get everyday), although I liked it much better on tap than out of the bottle (was almost completely flat for me out of the bottle = no head). Comes through with a wonderful taste up front, but fades into a watery finish - although it leaves a lingering licorice/chocolate flavor behind. If you happen to end up in Estes, you should definitely give it a try at the brewery (their pizza’s darn good too).
