Aroma is rich sweet grains and toffee. Taste has some chocolate and tobacco (or is that my cigarette?). Silky smooth with tender blended malts with just the slightest alcohol burn. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Apr 3, 2007 16.9 oz bottle: Brown liquid w/a thin ring of off white for a head around the glass, but no major head of which to speak. Aroma is sweetly maltly and lightly smokey phenolic. Lightly papery (showing some age), w/ bready malts and caramelized sugar. Clean other than the apparent oxidation. Flavor is bready malt dominated at first w/ a hint of smokiness, light cardboardy flavor mid palate, caramel, and a hint of bitterness in the semi sweet finish. Bready malt and bitter aftertaste that lingers. Medium body, medium carbonation, dry m/f, well hidden alcohol. After reading the commercial description, I’m guessing i didn’t get the most fresh bottle of this beer. I’m not 100% sure of the age, but @ 9%ABV, it should have stood up a little better than it appears to have. It’s a bit more bitter in the aftertaste than I’d prefer as well, but it keeps it from being too sweet. I’d also like to see some dark fruit character, but as I said, maybe age had something to do with it. Beerdedone (1885), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Pleasant nose, with some melanoid malt, a touch of carob, some soy sauce, and a metallic hint. Very nice flavor--quite sweet, chocolatey, with some vinous notes, and a good balance of nutty bitterness. thegreenrooster (1841), St.louis, Missouri, USA
