Ernest (4217), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jan 26, 2003 Updated: Aug 27, 2006 Unknown year (probably 04-05). Head is initially huge, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark orange-brown, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately yeasty (barnyard, cobwebs), moderately malty (caramel, dark bread, chocolate), with notes of cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, nutmeg, oregano, fennel seed, ginger, dried mushrooms, wet logs, earth, etc., etc., etc. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Much more earthy and natural than any other spiced beer I’ve ever had...honestly, it’s like the spices are in raw form, with leaves and compost scattered around. Very thick mouthfeel with an incredibly long finish (those same aromas from the nose just keep wafting up). Complex beyond belief. Cannot smell or taste any alcohol whatsoever, so I can hardly believe this is 10%. Dany is truly one-of-a-kind, and IMHO the best experimental brewer on the planet. The last 3 or 4 samples of this have all been truly awe-inspiring, so I’ve upped this from a 4.6 to a 4.8.
AgentSteve (747), Livermore, California, USA Aug 18, 2008 Dark brown pour with a thin cream colored head. Malty, sweet, dried fruit nose that leads into the flavor. Dry and spicy, and subtly smokey, along with a slight sour influence. No hint of alcohol. gotbeach (121), San Diego, California, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle at BRSG08. Creamy dark pour with spice and pepper aroma and flavors. Nice body for a 10%. Very enjoyable. maniac (1963), Richmond, Virginia, USA Aug 9, 2008 Bottle while in San Diego on 08/01/2008 for the RBSG Friday Pub Crawl. 6 years old. Cloudy brown body with a frothy tan head. Rich molassas, caramel, rum soaked fruit aroma. More rum soaked fruit and caramel flavor. Medium full body with low carbonation. jarspag (503), San Diego, California, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bottle w/ Simon. Hazy amber color, aroma and flavor is very belgian...stays dry and fluffy. Not any annoying, xmas like sweetness, but some slight spice. Satisfying and tasty. stefanje (544), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Aug 4, 2008 Bottle at RBSG grand tasting. Thanks to whoever brought this. Murky brown pour with a small khaki head. Aroma was light with spices, funk and cocoa. The taste was also light with a bit of cola showing through and some sour orange peel. The mouthfeel was a bit on the thin and light side. The finish was medium in duration and sour. Overall: A very tasty saison, perhaps if I had not sampled this on a night of so many great beers I would be more enthusiastic.
