Indra (1845), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Mar 9, 2008 750ml bottle. Thanks Tim! Mystifying aroma, spicy and fruity, leafy, herbal and dusty, with some mild black pepper and a host of other spices, also has a very lightly vinous touch. Cloudy, rusty amber color, head is uneven and lasting. Flavor is similarly inscrutable, with what seems like touches of allspice, nutmeg, clove, faint beryish tartness, some very gentle bitterness throughout, along with some wood, earth and a tangy finish that leaves hints of tea leaves behind. Very thin and smooth on the palate, body is surprisingly light as well. Alcohol is nigh undetectable. This is simply undefinable, even compared to the other Fantomes I’ve had. I did wish it had a bit more substance, though, as it was quite watery, again unlike the rest of this brewey’s lineup thus far.
JCB (1069), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 12, 2008 750ml from my Summer Secret Santa - thanks, Tyler!!! A darker pour than many Fantome beers, with a big and well-carbonated body. The nose certainly has some interesting aromas in there, not just the ubiquitous funk but a very dry herbal quality mixed with menthol and some cooking spices like sage and thyme. It resembles mint in places but it’s got a cooling quality that’s certainly like menthol - maybe juniper as some reviews have suggested (my palate doesn’t recognize it)? At any rate, the combination of the frosty flavors with the dry, herbals and the funk is a quirky one, very Fantome indeed. This Dany Prignon doesn’t give a fuck, and I say that with great admiration. Rciesla (897), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Oct 8, 2008 Bottle shared at Spyten Dyvil. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Loaded with spices, some mint, and citrus fruit, a touch of flowers and some Etoh. bhensonb (3015), Woodland, California, USA Sep 23, 2008 Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Dark amber color with a decent beige head. Interesting complex spice aromas. Something suggests a touch of winter green. Approximately medium body with mild carbonation. Never tasted juniper except in gin, but this seems similar. Maybe a bit like sassafras? It’s a very drinkable ale. Funk is very mild. AgentSteve (861), SF Bay Area, California, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours deep caramel with minimal head. The nose is spice and juniper. This carries into the flavor. The finish is clean and dry. ucusty (1215), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 8, 2008 Brown pour with a weird minty like nose. Medium bodied with loads of spice and funk. Slightly tart and dry finish
