Commercial Description:
Dany, the offbeat brewer at Fantôme, will try anything, and the results are always interesting. A beer made from dandelions would be worth a try if only because no one has ever brewed one before, but the great news is that this is actually a very good beer.
Dany and some cohorts get busy every spring picking bushels of dandelions that grow in the fields around the picturesque farmhouse brewery. The yellow flowers are removed and dried in the sun, then soaked in water for a few days. The thick, dark dandelion “tea” that results is the basis for the Pissenlit, which is made also from traditional barley malt and hops. It resembles a classic saison beer – golden spritzy brew, strong and very flavorful, with a good hop bite. You may have to strain to taste the dandelions, but you know they’re in there.
It should be noted that uncooked, the dandelion has a diuretic effect and is known in France as Pissenlit (literally, "wet the bed" - this also happens to be the British folk-name) for precisely this reason.

Bottle: Poured a hazy burnt orange with a off white head. The aroma is spice, grass/hay, and floral. Taste is tart and bitter with what seems to be spices and apples, definetly barnyard, and yet smooths off at the end.

2003 bottle. A big thanks to my cousin Greg (ggaughan)for providing this for our annual Christmas day tasting. I first sampled this on my 25th birthday at Monks Cafe in Philadelphia, and I have wanted to try it again ever since. Pours a murky golden color, capped with a small off-white head. Really nice saison aroma, with notes of earth, yeast, wheat, spice, flowers, and a mild herbal component. Flavor is complex as well, with yeast, spice, barnyard, grass, white grape, and flowers. Beautiful mildly tart finish, with white grape, flowers, and spice. Beautiful beer; I am really thankful that I got to try it again!

750ml bottle. Dated 2004 on the label. Wonderful aroma. Very ’’Fantome.’’ Tart, funky, earthy, grassy... Cut grass, wet leaf pile, musty attic, ginger and allspice, a touch of cola sweetness, gingerbread, pumpkin meat. Dusty and dry malt profile. Wildflower perfuminess. Beautiful nose... manages to be sour, sweet, hoppy and malty all at once. Pours a Very dark orange. Even a gentle pour yields a thick, rusty beer with a nice sized off white head. Flavor dosen’t quite match the intensity and complexity of the aroma. Rather dry and dusty. Dried leaves, dirt... Plenty of dry, bready malt, grassy and earthy hops... lacking in the funky yeast department, though. A hint of spicy ginger. Medium bodied with rather lively carbonation. Finishes earthy, dusty and rather dry. Thanks Joe!

Bottle thanks to Miketd, thanks a ton for hooking me up with this. Poured a hazy, vibrant red-orange color with a moderate beige head that faded to a layer and left some thick spotty lacing. Earthy, grassy aroma with hints of dandelions and some funky barnyard, straw, and some moderate fruitiness (orange, tangerine, light lemon). Smooth, lightly sweet entry with some soft grassy undertones leads into a nice flowery flavor with some tart fruit (orange and lemon) and a dry yeastiness with a bit of funk on the finish. Moderate carbonation, full and smooth on the palate. Very good.

[Bottle from La Roche.] Nice fresh fruit, sour in a very fresh way. Very drinkable with that wellbalanced "thistquencing" sweet and sour flavor of spices (pebber), dandelions, salt, acid, floral, earthy, some ginger and a nice dry finish.

(6/29/08) Bottle sample at RBESG08 grand tasting in Plzen. Hazy orange. Aroma of funky house character, yeast and fruits. A rather dry flavor, slightly tart, with some nice bretty funk and fruits and some bitterness in the finish. Medium-bodied. Lovely.

[1361-20080517] 1pt9.4floz bottle. Sour citrus yeast aroma has a hint of earth. Murky, medium orange brown body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. "Subdued" sour yeasty earthen malt flavour. Medium body is sour. Nice sour but I wasn’t as crazy about it as the others.
