Bottle 500ml from Sainsburys, Christchurch. Pours black with a large tan head. Aromas of chocolate malts and dark roasts. These flavours follow through in to the taste. Wow, what a wonderfully creamy mouthfeel. This is a really good stout – the best I’ve had so far this year.

An almost black colored beer, with a thick foamy beige head. It leaves a nice lace on the glass. The aroma of chocolate with cherries. Also some smoked malts. the taste is dry bitter, smokie malts, dark fruits and coffee. A little watery. The aftertaste is bitter for a long time.

500ml bottle (Sainsbury’s)
Pain au chocolat aroma, coffee cake, toasted brown bread. Dense burnt core to the taste, but bathed in a refreshing body such that it’s not oppressive in any way. Crumpets. Pleasant burnt finish, and also pretty hoppy. Well balanced, and a good example of a low ABV stout.

Good, pale beige head, irregular over fully opaque black beer. Rich roasted & vanilla aroma; slightly sweet, caramelized syrup. Dry stout taste initially, burnt & slight typical stout (roasted barley) sweetness. There’s a strange vinous flavour, as from a sweet, but ripened sherry, making it way more complex than an ordinary stout. Warming up, a faint smoked ham flavour, even! Medium bodied, very slick and nearly viscous, much more than a 4.5% ABV beer would warrant. Surprising - in the meliorative sense - stout.

500ml bottle. Black body with neat light tan head. Some chocolate notes in the aroma as well as a touch of fennel and some roasted grains. Grains again in the taste with not a lot of other flavours and a bit of a thin body. Still drank a lot easier than last nights stout.
