DYCSoccer17 (2013), Davis, California, USA Jun 1, 2008 Several 4 ounce samples at Raley Field Brewfest. Aroma has nice hints of bourbon flavor with sweet chocolate notes and some vanilla oaky aromas as well. I think I smell some coconut and perhaps some light floral hints. Rather aromatic. Mostly opaque dark brown/black body with a medium tan head. Very nice sweet chocolate flavors to start. Some coffee, vanilla, and bourbon come through in the middle. Sticky and chewy with a light booziness towards the end. More bourbon flavors present themselves at the end as well. A nicely balanced BA Impy.
Rogueone (365), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA Jul 30, 2008 Bottle: You can feel this beer in your chest when you smell it. Aroma is alcohol, raisin, acetone. Roastiness in there somewhere. Flavor is sweet, smooth chocolate malts, with a very heavy roastiness. Bitter. A bit hot. Where is the bourbon? JoeinUccle (667), Brussels, Belgium Jul 26, 2008 Bottle, thanks Ken. Black beer with nice tan head. Nose is not strong; dark sugar and mocha, New Orleans pralines. Tastes big, rummy, moderate bitterness suggests dark chocolate, sweet and hot like blended whiskey. Cloys a bit but not unpleasant. Lasting, dark-roasted aftertaste. ogglethorp (786), Ohio, USA Jul 23, 2008 Bottle. Pours inky black with a yellow/tan colored head. Aroma is chocolate, roast, caramel, alcohol. Flavor is again chocolate, coffee, caramel, toast, alcohol. Palate is massive, mild carbonation, finished warming and bitter. Silky smooth mouth feel, a little on the hot side. Very good. acrdz (4302), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottle shared by kmweaver. Nice nose of chocolate cookies, chocolate syrup, medium roast, some dark, charred fruit as well. Full, thick, frothy, then bright, with a huge chocolate note, medium roast levels, moderate dryness, silky on the palate, but does have some strange milky notes in the finish, like sweetened condensed milk. Over time gets astringent and slightly lactic. Somewhat warming... certainly succeeds at being big and thick. Started off well and then faced some problems, but overall it’s very solid. kmweaver (2010), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jul 18, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours a very dark, chocolate-brown color; minimal light; medium tan head with fine-bubbled lacing; solid pour. Lots of milk and dark chocolate, roasted / toasty malts, and a very soft, vanilla-laden bourbon / woody character in the nose; very nice, soft bourbon-aged imperial stout nose; some spicy, toasty graham cracker notes. Full mouthfeel: loads of dense, generous milk chocolate, roasted / burnt malts, and nougat upfront; roasted coffee, dense, chewy milk chocolate, and plenty of vanilla-tinged, chewy soft bourbon presence; really pleasant, soft bourbon presence with some buttery vanilla and sweet brown sugar; excellent barrel character; soft edges. Slightest show of warmth. Excellent, oily presence in the mouth. Lengthy finish: oily milk and dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and warming alcohol; toasty malts and coffee at the far end.
