Smells of coffee, dark chocolate, some pepper, caramel, hints of spiciness. Tastes of burnt malt, lots of toffee, hints of molasses, lots of sweet malt, sugar, touches of citrus. Mouthfeel is ouly with a finish that is sweet and lasting with a touch of pepper. Very nice! Tmoney99 (4742), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 6, 2006 Draft at brewpub. Black color with an average creamy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a dry sticky texture. Medium sweet roasted coffee flavor with a medium bitter finish of average duration. This is the style I favor but this was the standout brew. Skyview (4050), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 20, 2007 Last stop of the return trip during ABA Beer Tour ’07. Sampled on draught at the brewpub restaurant in downtown Rapid City, South Dakota. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a light tan head that slowly dissolves and leaves behind a spotty lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malt, rich coffee, a touch of coffee and plenty of earthy and flowery hops. Taste is full bodied with a slight carbonation added with flavors of dark coffee, and bittersweet Bakers cooking chocolate. Finish is creamy, with a dry bitter aftertaste. A solid dark and dry stout. | 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Jan 18, 2004 See my porter review, because I could hardly tell these beers apart. The stout presents with a bit more body and smoke, and a tanner head. PorterPounder (3138), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 19, 2003 Has a good roasted smoked flavor. Black as night appearance with a mocha colored head that sticks around for quite a while. Smokiness presents itself in the flavor as well. Goes down very smooth - had a pint of this after the sampler. Best of my visit to Firehouse. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 25, 2005 Growler filled right to the rim...
Thoroughly ebon hue, this one, with a thin ring of cocoa on top.
Mild roast in the nose, bittersweet espresso, but only a bit...nothing besides, really, just the roast, but it is nice enough...
Smooth, nearly creamy entrance on the palate, but only a limpid presence therafter. Light flavors of chocolate and coffee lie delicately on the tastebuds, and float softly away. Look how nice I’m being...
Medium bodied, with a soft, disappearing, unmemorable finish. Bit watery, not as hefty as we’d want from a stout, even a meek one. This is a Caspar Milquetoast, a Dilton Doily, a Martin Prince. But, it’s not bad, either, let us not say that. Just rather middle-of the-road, maybe even mediocre.
Serioiusly, this requires some major muscle to really count as a stout. As it is, it must take company with so many other lackluster brewpub versions, but at least they tried, eh? Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Sep 6, 2005 Nice dark color, small brown head that had a decent hang time then faded slowly to leave little behind. The aroma was dark and coffeeish with maybe a slight burnt caramel side, and a decent smoke. The taste was to bad but nothing really great eather.Decent flavor of coffee and smoke with a good malty side and maybe a bit of a slight grittiness to it but that maybe something from the food who knows.Good service though and well worth trying more of the other brews. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 24, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Charcoal hued topped with metallic brown. Coffee aromas of steamed vegetables and doughy cinnamon brownies. Bits of mint, spices, and tobacco ash. Flavor is pretty restrained and leans somewhat too heavily on a peppermint and burnt caramel sweetness set over a body of underplayed baker’s chocolate and savory roast. Palate is sharp and somewhat acidic, brightly carbonated and medium in body. Finishes lightly bitter with mineral water. A quiet example, clearly not trying to be too much and succeeding fairly in that modest goal.
