tytoanderso (1140), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Jun 23, 2008 12oz bottle. Aroma of lightly toasted caramel malt. Some mild fruity esters from the ale yeast. Dried banana. Very mild. Pours a brilliantly filtered clear dark copper with a creamy white head leaving light spotty lacing. Flavor is very bland. Dried, toasted malt and grain. Plenty of malt with little hop presence and little of the assumed wood tannin. Thin on the tongue with a grainy, watery and sweet finish. Thanks Todd! Heathen (420), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jun 20, 2008 THOUGHTS: Very British. The first bottle of this I tried I didn’t like very much, but now I really like it and would have it on a fairly regular basis if it were more readily available around here. Very easy to drink and a great break from super hoppy or chocolate malt bomb beers.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium brownish orange with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left virtually no lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy caramel malt, light herbal hops, a little cask wood, tea and maybe some tobacco. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was lightly sweet, moderately bitter and a little sour with an average duration. There was caramel malt, tea and then mild herbal hops. There was also some oak. Nice balance. The light to medium body was sort of oily with tingly carbonation and a slightly metallic finish. chrisafari (45), Orange, California, USA Jun 18, 2008 On Tap at Anaheim Stadium. Pours amber brown with a fluffy tan head. Slight aroma of roasted nuts and caramel malt. Flavor is mostly bitter and sour with some roastiness. Overall not very enjoyable, never again. alexanderj (1170), Roanoke, Virginia, USA Jun 15, 2008 Bottle; thought I had previously rated it, so I didn’t note anything about the color. Aroma of toffee and flowers. Flavor was spot on for the style. Very recognizable as an English pale. Good toffee and caramel flavor with some woody vanilla. Good crispness and slight sweetness. Hops were mainly grassy and floral. REally good for the style. Wulfstan (433), California, USA Jun 13, 2008 This was surprisingly good and surpsiginly English in overall character. It’s copper with a medium, light tan head, steadily shrinking to a thin, permanent top with only weak hints of lace. The aroma is flowery and a bit earthy with prominent breadcrust, as well as hints of caramel and grapefruit. The taste is mild caramelly malt, bread, mild lightly grapefruity citrus, hints of pine, leaves, and earth, and a light fruitiness. It’s a bit mild and some of the specific flavours are not my real preference, being a little more grapefruity than I ideally prefer. However, it has definite English qualities as well and is well balanced in flavours and in sweetness-bitterness, with both lasting. It also goes well with food and is easy to drink.
