Commercial Description:
Abacus is a barrel aged Barley Wine. Four barrels in total were selected for the blend. The base of this year’s offering was aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 3 years! The resulting beer is strong yet extremely elegant and smooth. Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. Abacus pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Had this brew at GABF on 9/24/09. Color is a muddy brown with light carbonation and small head. Aroma is rich with a little oak coming out. This is a full bodied brew with a rich feel and a finish of raisins and plums with oak and vanilla on the end. Overall its a very good Barley Wine.

Draft at the Firestone Walker booth GABF. Nose of bourbon, prunes, toffee, and oaky vanilla notes. Black with a small cinnamon tan head. Flavor is bourbon and oak with dark fruits and caramel. Reminds me of FW 10 in some ways.

On tap at the Firestone Walker Taproom. Dark brown in color. Nose is dominated by sharp alcohol and solvent. It stings the nostrils. Taste is the same. Can’t focus on anything besides the overbearing alcohol. Feels like drinking rubbing alcohol. Couldn’t drink it.

Flavor is caramel malt, roasted malt, bourbon, plum, fig, raisin, vanilla, oak, and alcohol. Really complex and good. Palate creamy with low carbonation.

On tap at Blue Palms. Pours a deep brown body and a small tan ring. Aroma of wood, raisin, toffee and bourbon. Kind of a light aroma. Taste, dark fruits, vanilla, light oxidation. A bit of bourbon in the back. Well hidden alcohol. Viscous mouth, with light carbonation. Nice.

6/18/09 on draft at the Nhc. Aroma is all plum flavored alcohol without any harshness and lots of caramel. Appearance is hazy dark brown with a medium maintained cream colored head. Flavor is more rich syrupy alcohol with no bittering and light roast. Mouthfeel is full bodied with almost no carb texture; warming. Overall, just for sipping but not overwhelming enough to stop you from sipping quickly.
