Commercial Description:
Abacus is a barrel aged Barley Wine. Four barrels in total were selected for the blend. The base of this year’s offering was aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 3 years! The resulting beer is strong yet extremely elegant and smooth. Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. Abacus pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

On tap at DLD. Dark brown pour with some bright ruby highlights and a thin film of tan foam. The aroma had burnt caramel and chocolate with pitted fruits. The flavor was all over the place. Chocolate, dark fruits, caramel, vanilla and oak, maybe a bit of molasses. A bit boozy. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and had minimal carbonation. A cool experiment, but this beer seemed to have a hard time finding it’s identity.

Tap @ O’Briens. Poured hazy copper-brown with a flat ring of white bubbles. No lacing. Earthy caramel and bread dough aroma with vanilla, oak, and whiskey. Boozy. Viscous, non-carbonated mouthfeel gave it the character of a liquer. Strong caramel and cherry flavors up front, then moves into the earthy, alcoholic oaken malt flavors. Somewhat of a mix between whiskey and cognac in the background. Long, sticky finish that tastes resiny, but without the bite. Definitely a sipper, but a great one at that.

Damn this beer is sick, sick sick. Thanks so much to Scottoale for telling me about it even though at the time (at alesmith I was like dude, I don’t need this I want to go home, I’m glad I got to have it. Tap @ O’brien’s. Pours blackish red with a tan ring. Nose is light and ok, really too cold to get much. Taste is wow, f’ing wow. Sweet, malty, rich slick with bourbon and oak and vanilla, yummers!

Aroma: Bourbon, toffee, caramel, hops and chocolate. Appearance: Leather brown with a smallish head. Flavor: Bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, butter scotch. Also some wood and hops tucked inbetween all that sweetness and bourbon. Palate: Smooth and silky. Overall: As good as an anniversary offering, if not better.

draft @ hard liver ’09 - dark brown with spotty white head; thick, woody aromas of sugar, molasses, vanilla; thin, strong and silky smooth; not as full bodied as i like, but overall a pretty dope BW that lived up to my excitement when this was spotted on the menu

On tap at Hard Liver Barleywine Festival 09, Brouwer’s Cafe. Murky very dark brown with a loose tan head. Doughy, woody nose. Creamy medium body. Wood, vanilla, and doughy malts on the mid-palate. Mild dry finish.

2008 on tap at Brouwer’s Hard Liver ’09. Surprise addition to the tap list. This stuff was great. Pours dark dark brown with a decent off-white head. Intense nose of bourbon, oatmeal, and buttery toffee. Floral hops come through in the taste with a little bit of tobacco as well. Full mouthfeel, nice bourbon/oatmeal component on the finish.
