Commercial Description:
Abacus is a barrel aged Barley Wine. Four barrels in total were selected for the blend. The base of this year’s offering was aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 3 years! The resulting beer is strong yet extremely elegant and smooth. Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. Abacus pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

On tap at the SF Barleywine fest at Toronado. Deep brown pour with a small white head. Very sweet for a barleywine, full of vanilla and a bunch of hop goodness as well. Nice molasses as well and some oaky goodness. Extremely tasty and so damn smooth!

Draught at Toronado. Lots of bourbon in this. Rich and full of vanilla and complete flavors. Very enjoyable.

2009 Boulder Strong Ale Festival: Cloudy brown. Lightish texture but smooth. Rich malts had brown sugar and chocolate. Pleasant aromas, mainly vanilla and dark fruit. Tasty, but lacked some complexity.

Draught at Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours dark brown with a small, fizzy, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (nutty, caramel, bread), average hops (flowers, grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of dates, vanilla, wood, and alcohol. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and an astringent finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Draught, Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Ruby colored beer. Nose lacks depth, but shows some malt and barrel elements of caramel, toast, toffee. Upon tasting, not a lot from the original beer. Sweet, fruity, barrel accented, but not complex or concentrated. One of the weaker examples of barrel aged strong ale at the fest.

Superbly sticky and cloying candied bourbon consuming the nose, no softness or complexity at all. Sweet plum juice and wine dominate up front. Rich and overly-sticky charred plum/cheap port across the middle. Depressingly coarse and flimsy body. 12% alcohol does not guarantee a full body, that comes from the mash...

Crushed with Jakebra at BSAF. Very nice. Bourbon complements nicely. Hops, balance, bourbon, nice. Dig it.

On tap at BSAF. Poured a deep garnet color with ruby highlights and a thin off-white head that receded to a ring. Aroma of sweet caramel, some dark fruit (plum, grape, fig), a soft yeastiness, and some moderate spicy bourbon. Smooth, sweet entry with strong hints of caramel, a bit of toffee, and some spicy bourbon and undertones of plum and fig that finishes moderately dry with some vanilla, oak, and a bit of alcohol. Low carbonation and smooth on the palate, although a tad thin. Overall a pretty solid beer, but pretty straight forward and not a lot of nuance.
