Commercial Description:
Abacus is a barrel aged Barley Wine. Four barrels in total were selected for the blend. The base of this year’s offering was aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 3 years! The resulting beer is strong yet extremely elegant and smooth. Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. Abacus pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Cask Stillage from the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 26/09/2009 Big bourbon aroma. Mid brown coloured sweet and rich on the palate. Strong in alcohol with a little dryness in a very bitter chocolate malt finish.

Superbly sticky and cloying candied bourbon consuming the nose, no softness or complexity at all. Sweet plum juice and wine dominate up front. Rich and overly-sticky charred plum/cheap port across the middle. Depressingly coarse and flimsy body. 12% alcohol does not guarantee a full body, that comes from the mash...

FoBAB 06: Dirty brown hue with sunset highlights and a lasting frothy head. The aroma has notes of old hops, tobacco, smoky and earthy malts, plum, phenolic, and more towards the British styled Barley wines. The taste starts with a smooth toasty malt forefront supported by grassy and peppery hops, olde skool oxidation, and a hint of alcohol. The finish is kinda sweet and sugary but not interfering. The mouth feel is dry, woody, and a tad chalky. Very nice overall, more towards style, I dug it enough to use 2 tickets on it.

GABF 2006: Clear brown color with a small tan head. Bourbon aroma hits you first, bordering too much. Some vanilla notes then you get hints of a fruity malt. The flavor was big on the bourbon as well. Fairly sweet with the malt just coming through. The flavor wasn’t as fruity. Very warming but not peppery.

Draught at Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours dark brown with a small, fizzy, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (nutty, caramel, bread), average hops (flowers, grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of dates, vanilla, wood, and alcohol. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and an astringent finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.
