Commercial Description:
Batch 1000 is a special limited release that commemorates the brewing of our one-thousandth batch at our brewery in Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast. While similar in style and flavor to our flagship Double Barrel Ale, Batch 1000 boasts the added distinction of being unfiltered, bottle conditioned and entirely fermented in new American oak barrels. The result is a beer that stands alone in quality and character. Ten years ago, when we brewed our first batch of Double Barrel Ale, we revived the lost art of barrel fermentation. Our inspiration was the classic Burton Union brewing method that was once responsible for England’s finest ales. Over time, this method was abandoned by most brewers because of the considerable expense and labor when compared to modern stainless steel brewing. Today, we remain the only American brewery to ferment beer in a union of oak barrels. Batch 1000 is ultimately a beer born of tradition and inspired by innovation. It is a unique piece of brewing art composed of the finest all-natural ingredients, one that should be consumed in its youth, at its freshest. Only 500 cases were produced.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with DarkElf (thanks!). Tasted side by side with the normal Double Barrel Ale. The Batch 1000 poured a deeper, hazy amber color with a larger sized off white head. Lots of little floaters. The regular was lighter and clear with a smaller sized off white head. 1000 had aromas of wood, oak, light vanilla, earthy, and some caramel. Softer tastes of caramel, vanilla, and citrus. The regular version was going south a little. Had a light cardboard aroma with lighter oak, caramel and vanilla. The 1000 was definitely better.

Poured a hazy amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma was earthy, woody oak, toffee, nutty, and some vanilla as well. Taste was more enjoyable, with caramel malts, some toffee, citrus fruits, and vanilla.

22oz bottle from my Secret Santa at Christmas in July! - Thanks! - Pours copper with a pretty fair foamy beige head. Aromas of caramel, some light citrus hops, some oak, and a touch of vanilla. Flavor is caramel, toffee, lots of vanilla, some oak notes, light hops but not as much as I got in the aroma. Medium bodied and pretty well carbonated. Dry finish. I think this one had more barrel flavors than the original. I got a lot more vanilla in this and more subtle flavors. Not bad..

If I was a commercial brewer and hit 1000 batches, I sure wouldn’t have produced this swill. OK - it’s not swill but it’s not that far off from the normal Double Barrel Ale. The limited edition box (or marketing ploy) also makes for a good trash receptible for this unispiring ale. Just go buy the Double Barrel and be proud that you didn’t get sucked in by the marketing campaign.

Side tasting @ PP Strong Ale Fest 2005: Poured a lightly hazed amber color with a medium off-white head. Malty aroma with some fruity notes some floral notes try to escape to the nose. Flavor pretty much matched the aroma. Caramel malt and some fruit. Pretty plain not much going on. Light to medium bodied.

22oz bottle from Bev Mo. Pours a hazy reddish amber color......off white head. Nose of apricot, oak, and different malts. You can really taste the different steps they took to brew this beer specialy.

From Bottle. Pour of reddish brown leather with a thin layer of off white head. Aroma of apricot brandy, lime zest, and coriander leaves. Thin, carbonated mouthfeel that starts with a watery oakiness before fading to a light, caramel vanilla maltiness. Final smack of fresh grass dipped in honey. Wow. I expected more. This wasn’t bad, but I was definitely sucked in by the words "Batch 1000" and "limited release". There was no reason to sell this as individually boxed beers when you can by equally pleasing beers by the case.

Bottle (thanks Tom N for sharing). Copper in color with a small head. Taste wood right from the start with an artificial vanilla (similar to Michelob Celebrate). Lively body with a cola taste. Uninspiring.
