Tasted side by side with the normal Double Barrel Ale. The Batch 1000 poured a deeper, hazy amber color with a larger sized off white head. Lots of little floaters. The regular was lighter and clear with a smaller sized off white head. 1000 had aromas of wood, oak, light vanilla, earthy, and some caramel. Softer tastes of caramel, vanilla, and citrus. The regular version was going south a little. Had a light cardboard aroma with lighter oak, caramel and vanilla. The 1000 was definitely better. hopscotch (5540), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 7, 2008 Bottle... Clear, textbook amber ale with a mid-sized, fluffy, white head. Good retention. Nice aromas of toffee, cookie, biscuit and black tea with a hint of oak. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. Very well-balanced. Tastes mainly of unsweetened black tea with a smidgen of toffee malt. Short, crisp, clean finish. JoeMcPhee (5030), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 30, 2008 Tap. Hazy amber beer with a thin white head. Aroma is softly malty with a bit of soft caramel and a light orangey fruitiness. Soft fruity palate, light sweetness and a nice balance. It’s pretty simple, but quite tasty. bhensonb (4373), Woodland, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 1, 2006 Well, I paid $5.99. There’s a cabernet character - maybe added by the oak, but the wine doesn’t get it from oak, so? I think this ale is just getting started. I can see it headed towards Old Suffolk from Green King. There’s a hint that a bit of sour is on its way (and this is bottle conditioned!). If I can get another, I’ll age it in a wine cooler for 5 years. The bitter stays. There is some floral component that ties to the sides of the tongue. Geez, this has got to be one of the top 20 or 30 ales I have ever had. Please, please do this again. I think I can get it again at BevMo; I hope. heemer77 (4311), Savannah, Missouri, USA

I was fairly impressed with this beer. This poured with a medium orange body. The aroma was vanilla, oak and sweet caramel. The taste had oak and dry toffee. As it warmed, it gained a more bourbon like character. Smooth. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 5, 2006 Side tasting @ PP Strong Ale Fest 2005: Poured a lightly hazed amber color with a medium off-white head. Malty aroma with some fruity notes some floral notes try to escape to the nose. Flavor pretty much matched the aroma. Caramel malt and some fruit. Pretty plain not much going on. Light to medium bodied. beerguy101 (3971), Newark, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2005 This English Pale Ale pours a amber brown color from a 22 oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is caramel malts, fruity with a hint of oak and wood. A medium bodied Pale Ale. Malts are caramel and biscuty. Hops are slightly spicy and citrusy kind of mild. Hints of oak flavors. The oak mellows the sweetness of the malts, but is very understated and subtle. Nice balance. Very nice sipping beer. I do have a question. The only way I could tell that beer was the Batch 1000 aged in oak was the box it came in. The label on the 220z bottle looked like the normal Double Barrel. I don’t recall seeing the beer in a 22 bottle but I could be wrong. Anybody? Nice beer and an interesting example of oak aging.
Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
