Commercial Description:
Batch 1000 is a special limited release that commemorates the brewing of our one-thousandth batch at our brewery in Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast. While similar in style and flavor to our flagship Double Barrel Ale, Batch 1000 boasts the added distinction of being unfiltered, bottle conditioned and entirely fermented in new American oak barrels. The result is a beer that stands alone in quality and character. Ten years ago, when we brewed our first batch of Double Barrel Ale, we revived the lost art of barrel fermentation. Our inspiration was the classic Burton Union brewing method that was once responsible for England’s finest ales. Over time, this method was abandoned by most brewers because of the considerable expense and labor when compared to modern stainless steel brewing. Today, we remain the only American brewery to ferment beer in a union of oak barrels. Batch 1000 is ultimately a beer born of tradition and inspired by innovation. It is a unique piece of brewing art composed of the finest all-natural ingredients, one that should be consumed in its youth, at its freshest. Only 500 cases were produced.

Well, I paid $5.99. There’s a cabernet character - maybe added by the oak, but the wine doesn’t get it from oak, so? I think this ale is just getting started. I can see it headed towards Old Suffolk from Green King. There’s a hint that a bit of sour is on its way (and this is bottle conditioned!). If I can get another, I’ll age it in a wine cooler for 5 years. The bitter stays. There is some floral component that ties to the sides of the tongue. Geez, this has got to be one of the top 20 or 30 ales I have ever had. Please, please do this again. I think I can get it again at BevMo; I hope.

Amber with lots of particulates. Aroma of oak, roasty malts, caramel, dried fruit and brandy. Tastes includes rich roasty malts, grains, earth, and an overall malty and sweet balance. Not big but seemingly flawless for a smooth, easy brew.

This English Pale Ale pours a amber brown color from a 22 oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is caramel malts, fruity with a hint of oak and wood. A medium bodied Pale Ale. Malts are caramel and biscuty. Hops are slightly spicy and citrusy kind of mild. Hints of oak flavors. The oak mellows the sweetness of the malts, but is very understated and subtle. Nice balance. Very nice sipping beer. I do have a question. The only way I could tell that beer was the Batch 1000 aged in oak was the box it came in. The label on the 220z bottle looked like the normal Double Barrel. I don’t recall seeing the beer in a 22 bottle but I could be wrong. Anybody? Nice beer and an interesting example of oak aging. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Deep garnet hue, makes a tight offwhite rocky mountain that has a nice lingering lace. Rich crisp malty aroma with hints of spice & vanilla. Oaky vanilla character shines through the flavor, slight bittering up front and light caramel in the end. Nice creamy, buttery mouthfeel, medium body and very smooth carbonation with a slick oily finish. This is a solid, drinkable offering, I wish this could replace the standard fare Double Barrel Ale. Cloudy bronze with a bubbly, light beige cover. Smells and tastes like a hybrid pale ale / chardonnay. Nice vanilla and butterscotch oak flavours, though the oakiness got annoying after a while. It’s nice to experience these flavours in a smaller beer for a change. Smooth with low bitterness and only detectable hops flavour. Medium to light with moderate carbonation and lingering oakiness.

Dark copper colored pour with a small white head. The oak is there in the aroma, with vanilla and malts coming through as well. At first taste, the sweet maltiness comes through, but once the oak kicks in, it takes over. Glad I got to try the special batch, but the regular DBA, without the oak, for me is much more enjoyable.

A mid-sized creamy beige head is lowly and partially receding. The body is lightly hazed and obviously unfiltered and bottle conditioned, a pretty glowing amber with earthy oranges. The nose is softly oaky, a wooden note that overlaps a warming hoppiness with grass and floral characteristics. Mild roast blends with toffee and toasted grain. The aroma is soft, incredibly welcoming and earthy while still retaining a fresh aspect. The flavor is filled with oak and light carameland hints of sherried oxidation notes. The blend is sublime. Bitterness is mild, astringency nil. Sweetness is medium and balance and drinkability are top notch. English hops have done a remarkable job preserving this ale. Floral notes flutter in and out and create a soft but stark backdrop that resembles a backing wall of flowerbed, soily earthiness included. The finish is loaded with toffee, medium bitterness and heavy toasted malt. Mildly drying on the palate and on the way down, this medium bodied beer is well-bubbled and smooth. A pleasurable experience. Firestone is great.
