Commercial Description:
A singularly distinctive beer that represents our finest brewing efforts, Walker’s Reserve is an elegant dark ale featuring robust flavors of espresso, caramel and bittersweet chocolate. This wood-conditioned brew employs five specialty malts along with smooth silky oats for added complexity and flavor. Gentle English Goldings and spicy American Cascade hops together lend a perfect finish to this big, bittersweet ale. Somewhere between porter and stout, this unfiltered and bottle-conditioned beer is produced in small batches for the true connoisseur.

Bottle from some bottle shop in Carlsbad. Pours a deep brown with a tan head. Aroma is milky with a hint of dark chocolate and coffee. Lighter side of medium bodied with a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Somewhat British like in character, with a mixture of caramel, tobacco, chocolate, and nuts. Moderate amount of residual sweetness. Tame amount of bitterness on the finish, along with some wet grains and wood. Not bad at all.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, notes of malt and a touch of coffee. Flavor is incredibly smooth, flavorful with a wash of chocolate, coffee and malts. A beer that greatly complimented the cold weather.

Reviewed 12/28/2008 (bottle): Pours a very dark red brown color body, with a big foamy craggy tan head. Some alcohol, strong coffee. A little dusty sweet chocolate aroma, not too strong. Watery palate. Weak roasted coffee taste, a little bit of chocolate. Nice sipping beer.

Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa. The black body was topped with a large light tan head. The aroma was coffee and strong roast. There was also some soybean and walnuts. The taste was medium coffee roast with some walnuts. A candy caramel finish. A pleasing porter, but not super special.

22oz bomber pours nearly opaque brown with ruby halo and capped in beige tight head. Aroma is coffee with cream and chocolate with nuttiness. Medium body, or more, with flavor tones of coffee, malt, oak and whiskey. Whiskey in finish. Rewarding.

From a 22 oz bottle purchased locally. Aroma is full of roasted coffee and chocolate. Color is a deep ruby brown with a creamy tan head that laces well. Flavor is more roast coffee, with a strong toasty malt backbone. Bitterness is strong but not overpowering. It works well with the malt. Some citrus hop flavor in the finish. Clean, dry and creamy. Overall very complex and well balanced.

Dark brown pour with a solid bit of carbonation and a medium sized tan head. Chocolate and malt in the aroma with maybe a very mild hint of smokiness. Very full bodied and with a hearty malt and chocolate flavor with some mild coffee backing. Much better than I expected for a brewery most noted for their pale ales!
