20090919 Cask at Max’s. Darker amber with only slight head. Aroma is quite smoky with anise notes. Sulfur, smoke, and some lactic acid and spice that reminds of salami on the palate. Soft mouthfeel. Good, but pales in comparison to the cask Schlenkerla beers enjoyed the same day.

Gravity cask at Redlight. Pours a dark brown with a thin frothy head. Big smoky, bacon, meaty and toffee aromas. Smooth, slightly thin body with notes of sweet carmel malt and a touch of smoke. Nice touch of smoke of the finish. Very good brew.

Gravity cask @ redlight redlight. Mild smokey aroma with caramelly malts, sweet beechwood smoke. Pours beautifully, caramelly nut brown with a thick creamy beige head, pours magically! Very mild smoke flavor caramelly malts with a big of a tartness, i wonder if it was fermented in wood or something? Good and drinkable rauchbier though!

Gravity pour at RedLight. Gorgeous beer- clear dark ruby/brown topped by an off white ice cream smooh head. Mild wood smoke, toasty malt, a bit of a sour twang on the finish. Not sure if the sourness is intentional, but I dig it. Medium body, smooth, very easy to drink. Enjoyable session smoked beer.

Gravity cask at redlight redlight. Pours a delicious deep amber with an excellent very creamy head. The aroma is smoky and a tad perfumey. The flavor while smokey is not overwhelmingly smoky. Hints of apple wood. Just a dash tart. I went back and forth and this beer over the course of drinking it all night. In the end I decided that I didn’t care for it all that much.

Gravity cask at Redlight Redlight. Pours a clear, dark, reddish brown or sienna color. The head is as dense and creamy as any ive ever seen, resembling that of Guinness on steriods. Light tan in color, the head leaves thick clumps of lacing behind. Aromas are quite smoky, with a peppery beechwood overtone, lightly sweet, caramelized grain showing in the background. There’s a hint of earthy molasses in there. The flavor is based in toasted grain malt and moderate caramel, with a trace of tart lacto-wheat. Woody smoke is softer than it comes across on the nose, yet still prominent. The body is a little thin, yet balanced and easily sessionable. Pretty solid brew.

500ml bottle (Pikkulintu, Helsinki)
Sweet smoky aroma. Perhaps a little too sweet, and lacking the sharp edges of the classics like Schlenkerla, but quite tempting nevertheless. Sweet smooth palate. Underattenuated. Decent malty body, at times floury, but perhaps a bit too sweet. Welcome break from the sugar+hop disasters from Mikkeller we had the same evening. Simple rauch, not enough bite, and too sweet.
