Aroma is sweet, pine, grapefruit, toffee/maple, light oak. Taste is medium sweet, caramel/toffee at the start, but quickly turns to big pine, some grapefruit, some caramel, oak. Full body that conceals the alcohol well. Not for the faint of heart, but those of hearty constitutions will be richly rewarded. Volgon (2490), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Very intense pine, spruce, resin aroma with a burnt edge to it. Starts and ends heavily bitter, thick syrupy full body. This beer is like getting smacked in the head. Wow. 5000 (2900), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 14, 2004 Bottle pours a thick caramel, tons of yeastie bits floating about, medium off-white pancake batter like head, with attractive lacing. Aroma of hops, pine, and a slight woody note. Very floral up front, slight alcohol tinge, artificially sweet, but perhaps a bit of hairspray. Finishes long, with a slight bitterness, burnt oak, and alcohol. Not as bitter or offensive as I thought, but while interesting, I don’t find it all that exceptional.

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 13, 2004 Strange brew. Oddly hoppy aroma. There seems to be a touch of apple in the aroma, banana in the flavor. Otherwise I don’t really know what to say. Not real impressed, doesn’t stand up to the big boys. Marc (477), Yokosuka, Japan
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 13, 2004 Slightly soapy, resiny, nad herbal nose. Mild soft bitterness goes to all corners of the mouth with more of that soapiness. Touches of current, vinious malt, well hidden alcohol, raisons, and cavendish tobbaco. Finnishes Herbal, soapy, resinous, and mineraly. 10% abv and 100 IBU’s are not apparent. Most subtle IIPA I have ever had. cstuartj (326), Washington, USA

This IPA is clean refreshing, deep in it’s hopiness but not heavy handed like so may IPAs can be. Deffinetely one to return to over and over again. presario (3010), Calgary, Alberta, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 4, 2004 Dark amber. Barleywine-like nose. Malty thick body holds the heavy hops well. Flavour tends more towards a barleywine than an IPA style although without the spice. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 17, 2004 Bottle. Lots going on in here, pretty concentrated thick mouthfeel. Smells very hop resiny/piney, with a bit of bootpolish. Toffee, nuts, resiny, salty, woody, earthy. There was also something a little Belgian abour it. I have to say that it didn’t really taste like a double IPA to me. Pretty rich and sticky, yet nicely dry toward the finish. Nobbad.
