Commercial Description:
Oak-aged Doppelbock is a full-bodied lager with a deep reddish-brown color. We’ve brewed it in the classic German tradition, with noble Hallertauer and Columbus hops added to Pale and Chocolate malts and a large portion of Munich malt . As a result, Detonator offers a malty aroma and palate, which is balanced by its relatively dry finish, plus the subtly melded character of the robust ales and fine Merlot which previously filled the oak. This lager is available seasonally in bottles and on draught.

Bottle. Clear ruby/copper color with a medium head. Good lacing. Rich grains and toffee. Lots of dark fruit and a bit of cherries. A bit warm, but very nice.

Pours dark brown with a small off white head. Smells of dark fruits, berries, dark malts, and mild caramel. The taste is much the same, a lot of sweet malty sugars, dark fruits, and a little roast too. This seems to be incredible balanced, and very flavorful. nothing too overbearing in the flavor, and the alcohol is masked really well. The finish is long with a little banana in there too. leaves a sweet aftertaste on the palate. really nice beer.

A delicious, malty, slightly hopped German-style lager. Head dissapears quick; dry finish. Definitely one of the best beers brewed in the USA.

Stunning to look at. A thick body of cloudy mahogany with a heavy cream skin. Plenty of staying power. Nose of brandy, plums, French toast and Christmas pudding. Intricate. Further notes of fresh cinnamon, nutmeg, and black licorice. Flashes of bright fruit in a more normal vein arrive here and there amidst all the holiday fanfare. Tastes a bit more simple, though certainly substantial. Fruitcake, rye, Belgian chocolate. Rich dark grapes and tannic texture in a finishing touch of Malbec wine. Sweetness never dominates. Smooth. A classy and unique interpretation.

Light brown with little head. Nose is oak, malt, carmel, toffee, and sour citrus. Heavey palate with lots of brown sugar sweetness that lingers. Oak, vanilla, charcoal, carmel, faint sourness and a finish of lingering chocolate. Tasty beer.

Bottle (12oz). Incredibly deep ruby, mostly clear, average foamy tan head. Aroma of currents, cranberries and raisins, pretty solid molasses/caramel malt body, sweet yet fruit-tart, almost lactic ... hints at roasty alcoholic depths. The taste - really nice and smooth, unequal parts roast coffee bean malt, dry floral hops, alcohol, light tart fruit - very malty. Average slick body, not very carbonated, nicely astringent and alcoholic without taking away from the roast malt - really smooth both easy to drink AND a classic sipper - gets roastier and maltier - and boozier - as it warms to room temp; solid doppel, well done.

Pours dark red with tan head. Aroma of raisins and sweet malt. Flavor was big on sweet malt. Caramel, chocolate, and some molasses to start. Had somewhat of a dry hop finish.

12oz bottle, notched on May (what year?). My bottle claims 8.5% ABV. Pours a deep ruby with a 1/2 finger beige head, low retention. Aroma of tobacco, toffee, light smoke and char, oak, and lightly tart raisins. There is also some light roast and sherry. So far, so very good. Flavor disappoints with some chalky char being one of the dominant flavors. There is still some smoke, alcohol, oak, some raisins, light chocolate, but not as strong as I’d have wanted. However, as this did warm the chalk and char didn’t seem as bad. Not really any alcohol burn at all. Semidry finish. Full creamy body with some minimally prickly light carbonation. Very good beer.
