| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 23, 2006 Had to fight like hell to get a head on this one. Kind of sudsy and dissipated quickly. Very unimpressive. BUT, the aroma is great and I can smell it from across the table. Rich and malty with some dark fruit, grapes and molasses. Color is a very dark reddish brown. Don’t really detect the oak in there. A little flat in the mouth. Lighter body than expected. Little warmth from the alcohol. Malty sweet with a bit of soy sauce and more grapes. Needs to have a thicker palate and really more flavor. Kind of disappointing. Finish is oily and sweet. Very easy drinking. A little underwhealmed by this brew. Expected more from this great brewer. Wondering if this bottle may be off a little. Nugget (30), Seattle, Washington, USA

Now I remember what drove me on my quest. Thanks to Dennis at Big * for being such a pimp. Blah blah blah doppelbock but soooo good and easiergoing (and more alcoholic) than Paulaner or Spaten. Tannins from the oak complement the db roastiness perfectly. Has an interesting finish, like champagne. Pairs nicely with marijuana. ratman197 (3214), Arvada, Colorado, USA

This beer has an enticing aroma full of dried, dark fruits, nougat, caramel, and it’s subtly vinous. The palate is slick and warm adding some unctuousness and oak feelings to the overall vinous character. It’s only now that I’m noticing the beer has spent time in a wine barrel, and I’m impressed with the integration of wood and grape tanin with the sweet and luscious malts. Beautiful stuff. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of warm cherries, toffee, cinnamon spice and lots of organic tones. Rich and deep flavor with great oak character and not overly sweet. A well-balanced doppelbock. This is excellent. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 31, 2005 Bottle from winter SS. Ah, it’s been awhile since I’ve had a good doppel, and this is a pretty good one. Pours dark with a nice head. Very malty and sweet aroma and the oak sticks it’s head out after a few minutes at room temp. Roasted malts, coffee and semisweet chocolate all mix in the flavor in perfect harmony. Again, as it warms, the oak and bourbon become more present. Don’t let it sit too long though, because it’s gets a bit too smoky by the end. The finish is ultra smooth and delicate. A very good doppel, and one of the best. Thanks, Secret Santa! bu11zeye (5470), Frisco, Texas, USA
