Commercial Description:
Oak-aged Doppelbock is a full-bodied lager with a deep reddish-brown color. We’ve brewed it in the classic German tradition, with noble Hallertauer and Columbus hops added to Pale and Chocolate malts and a large portion of Munich malt . As a result, Detonator offers a malty aroma and palate, which is balanced by its relatively dry finish, plus the subtly melded character of the robust ales and fine Merlot which previously filled the oak. This lager is available seasonally in bottles and on draught.

Dark brown colour. Rich malty aroma - earthy, toffee, caramel all well extracted. Lots of toffee, hints of wood on the palate. Really chewy, almost molasses-like. Big malt finish. A touch simplistic and the flavour doesn’t come through as boldly as the aroma.

Molasses, prunes, sugary figs and heavy malts in the flavor and aroma. Black, heavy body with a small head around the sides of the glass. Refreshing and pleasant flavor, the palate is full of roasted malts and bitter chocolate.

Proficient caramel with exotic wild rice is ably lifted by malt roastiness...Fruity esters are slowly growing through the wet earth...A little thin for my tastes, but this is really not a problem for such an interesting brew...

Deep amber/brown color with a thin ring of white lace - aroma of brown sugar, caramel and a background a red wine - medium carbonation with a soft mouthfeel and medium body - very mild sweetness, which is a welcome change since so many doppels can be so cloying - caramel, nutmeg, moderate hops - a hint of cinnimon and vinous notes sets this apart - a solid doppelbock, but perhaps not worth the price.

Oh, yes. Yes. A full and malty wood-aged doppel. This was wonderful and complex. A dark brown-red pour with a snappy diminishing head and aromas of oak, wine, muffins, bran, caramel, and butter drift up. Taste is monstrously sweet but balanced all the through by acidity. Mouthfeel is heavy but clean. Finish is winey and caramelly with afternotes of spicy hops. Superb.

Bonus bottle thanks to Larry Pitonka. Pour is a nice dark brown, seemingly black, with a thin head. Aroma is busy with caramel, oak, chocolate and roasted malt as well as fig. The mouthfeel is good right off the bat. It has a good bitterness at first then gets down to brass tax with a sticky viscous feel. Flavor gets to you too, pleanty of sweetness, maltyness and still being a hearty beer with caramel, oak, dark fruit and happiness and rainbow kittens. Well, maybe not so much dark fruit comes through in the flavor, but its still damn tastey.

Soy, inky.. Stylistic to the doppelbock. High alcohol noted. Roasted malt. No oak presence is here; notheless a good brew.
