Pours a dark brown with an ornage tint when held to the light. No head just an off-white ring around the edge of the glass. Nice chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar flavors that seem to intensify in the finish. Very light hops sneak into the finish. Very nice. Thanks to Styles for this one. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 24, 2005 (Bottle) Pours a thin, creamy, almond head with a brown body. The nose is of layers of roasted malts and mild whiskey. Its hard to tell if this beer is more Oak Aged than Doppelbock - its hardly what I expected as, in Canada, most bocks are watery and using caramel malts. This beer was strong in the maltiness with chocolate and smoke marching on the tastebuds. Enjoyable but not the daily quaffer... StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 23, 2005 Medium brown color with a small, fizzy tan head. Wavy and dot like lacing. Good malty smell with distinguishable alcohol content. Unique, burnt / roasted malt taste. Some chocolate malt nodes coupled with a slight dry bitterness. Oak aging is discernable and hints at a whiskey/rye combination each time it hits the middle of the tongue. Taste evolves over time, taking on a branded leather visage. The aftertaste is similar to smoking a dark cigar two minutes longer than you should have. Eventually I come to the realization that this doppelbock, while unique, isn’t going to live up to my high expectations. BBB63 (4229), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 19, 2005 12 oz bottle: Muddy deep brown with a fading off-white head and good lace. The aroma has a big caramelized nose with undertones of plum/prune/raisin, floral hops, smoke and oak, a hint of lactic twang, nice! The taste starts sweet indeed but a quick snap of fruit keeps it from becoming cloy. I get a almost baltic porter like smoky malt and lager yeast character from this beer, way cool. The finish displays the oak barrel and vinous quality long after the beer as past the lips. YUMMY! The feel could still be a bit heavier but work within the framework of the overall offering, moderate warming in the long haul. Nice, nice and I guess this will sadly no longer be oak aged either like the other Fish Tale offerings, to bad because this is a great brew and world-class. Many thanks Matt for the bottle in trade. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 15, 2005 Updated: Mar 19, 200512 oz bottle. Near-black molasses, small lasting dark creamy top...milk chocolate-grapy nose, somewhat lactic...malty-milky body, nice bit of dry hoppiness running throughout, predominantly milk-chocolate/vanilla texture with a touch of alcohol...flavors intensify quite a bit as it warms....wasn’t impressed at first, having this after the knockout St. Victorious, but it grew on me. I probably need another... presario (2960), Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Roasted malty aroma with chocolate, caramel, prune, and wood. Flavor is sweet and malty with hints of dark fruit up front and a woody, smokey and bitter hop finish. Semi-dry, medium bodied and warming. Prostman (1077), Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 5, 2005 This was one of the better doppelbocks I have ever tried. There is a distinct flavor that I really can’t put my finger on but it made we want more and more. The beer poured a dark brown in color and the head was pretty thin. The flavor, as mentioned, was wonderful with some tones of caramel, toffee, nuttiness, and maltiness. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it.
