Commercial Description:
Oak-aged Doppelbock is a full-bodied lager with a deep reddish-brown color. We’ve brewed it in the classic German tradition, with noble Hallertauer and Columbus hops added to Pale and Chocolate malts and a large portion of Munich malt . As a result, Detonator offers a malty aroma and palate, which is balanced by its relatively dry finish, plus the subtly melded character of the robust ales and fine Merlot which previously filled the oak. This lager is available seasonally in bottles and on draught.

Pours a sexy dark, dark red, with a tiny camel coloured head. Wine esque aroma with molasses, coffee, raisins, and dark malts. Flavors are very complex. Sweetness hits your tongue and then mellows out into a malty bitterness. Flavors are raisins, molasses, coffee, and malt. Really interesting beer.

Thanks again to General Gao for this 12 oz! Nearly opaque brown-black with a big, lasting head that leaves some nice frosty lace behind. Chocolate, caramel, a hint of molasses, and maybe a whiff of alcohol on the nose. Tastes of chocolate, molasses, fig, raisin, vanilla, oak, and light whiskey. Medium body is smooth and watery, with just enough dryness on the finish.

old rating: 7/4/7/4/15 - 3.7, vintage 2007. vintage 2008 pours a black with a red tint when held to the light, a thin tan head, good lacing. smell of grain, malt, some cocoa, some caramel, and roasted nuts. taste of dark chocolate, some wheat, touch of vanilla, a little malt, some sweet caramel, a roastiness to it, end is a little dry with some bitterness.

Bomber from Bottle Trek. Very dark reddish brown color with a slight tan head. Rich aromas of dark roasted malt and chocolate. A tad vinous. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is chocolate, dark roast malt, and perhaps a coffee touch. It’s dark stuff. Could also be some dark fruit. Still seems a bit vinous. It’s extremely tasty. Finish is not all that sweet, and there’s some bitter around the edges. A really good beer.

12oz bottle from Discount liquor’s bargain bin. I saw it sitting by itself looking lonely and pathetic. For only 99 cents I thought, "why not"?

Pours a nice frothy head with a decent amount of lacing. Deep reddish hue with nice aromas of molasses, noble hops and vanilla. Flavour much of the same, but with an added creamy character that left a pleasant mouthfeel. A bit of smoke helps to round this out and give it just a touch of added complexity. Pretty well done offering from Fish Tale.

Only one Fish Tale was on the shelf at Steve’s in Madison and it was this one. Not my favorite style, I bought it just because it was Fish Tale. No regrets. Sweet, malty, chocolate flavor. Excellent Dopplebock.

A little bit expensive for what it is, but a good beer for sure. Sweet with caramel, mollassas, and malt. Some chocolate in there as well, but sweet chocolate, not bitter. Also, sugar beets are surprisingly a prominent flavor, whether there are any beers or not I don’t know. I don’t taste the oak.
