Commercial Description:
Oak-aged Doppelbock is a full-bodied lager with a deep reddish-brown color. We’ve brewed it in the classic German tradition, with noble Hallertauer and Columbus hops added to Pale and Chocolate malts and a large portion of Munich malt . As a result, Detonator offers a malty aroma and palate, which is balanced by its relatively dry finish, plus the subtly melded character of the robust ales and fine Merlot which previously filled the oak. This lager is available seasonally in bottles and on draught.

Pours dark brown with a thin head. Aroma is a little weak with chocolate, molasses, toasty, nuts. Was expecting something a little more interesting.

In short: Typical and highly drinkable Doppelbock.
How: Bottle 22oz, age unknown but consumed with a few weeks after receiving it from after4ever. Thanks a lot Tom
The look: Brown body with red highlights with a medium mocha head
In long: Strong nose of molasses. Soft silky body with molasses, figs, pecans and a little chocolate. Light toastiness. Some peppery hops in the finish. This is a simple but effective highly drinkable Doppelbock. A session Doppelbock if I may say so. For once I agree with the Islamic Jihad Movement, I’d love to get my hands on some more good Detonators.

(sampled at Zipp’s winter tasting) Poured dark brown with a large off-white head. Really nice aroma, with caramel, must, grain, and light vanilla. Taste was very sweet with toffee, and light grain finish. As the beer warmed if turned to more of a toasty or roasted finish with some chocolate appearing mid palate. Fairly full mouthfeel. I was surprised by this one.

(22 oz. bottle (8.5% ABV) via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=3 target=blank>TheCheeseMan, thanks Daniel!) Pours darkish auburn brown with one finger of sturdy, even tan head. Sweet malty aroma of raisins, port, licorice and brown sugar. Mouthfeel a little thin and a little fizzy. Nice, thin, weepy and persistent rings of lacing. Flavor is malty and smokey - quite chocolatey but not as much as TH Liberator. Notes of chocolate, brown sugar and port. Nice bit of warming alcohol presence. A pinch of bitterness closes it out. A very good doppel but to me needs a bit beefier palate and a bit richer flavor.

A good Dopple, though certainly no better than many others of the breed out there. A bit of smoked oak and malt in the nose, pouring a dark amber bordering on black, and with a palette of oak, dark fruits, roasted nuts, and oats across the tongue, with a mildly dry, lightly hoppy finish.

Bottle, thanks to the BC donors ;-). Dark red brown, creamy golden brown head. Very rich brown sugar and plums in port aroma. Roasted, chocolate, caramel and plum flavor, resiny hops to balance - very pleasant. Unfortunate scrawny body, after this interresing imperialesque start I really need something to chew on. Finish is somewhat feeble as well - mash up a good fraction unfermentable sugars and Bob is your uncle here.

[1063-20080124] 12floz (w/ jerc). Wafts of old breath and coffee grounds. Dark brown black body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Malt roast and spent coffee grounds flavour. Medium-full body. Mild. (6/4/7/3/14) 3.4

[1359B-20080517] 650mL bottle. Mild Belgian yeast aroma with a sweet syrupy roast. Darkly hazy, dark brown body with a long-lasting creamy light tan head. Roasted malt flavour is sweet and mysteriously boozy. Full body is smooth. Quite nice. (6/4/7/4/14) 3.5

2008-01-24. Bottle picked up in Calgary November 2007. Very dark brown body with a modest tan head (3+). Aroma of tasty malt, caramel, ovaltine, and hint of earthy smoke. (7+) Similar flavour, sweet malt, toasty dry malt in the finish and lingering tangy malt character. Average to medium palate (3+) Solid and well made, but the earthy character and smoky hints detract from the overall for my own personal liking.
