There is a distinct flavor that I really can’t put my finger on but it made we want more and more. The beer poured a dark brown in color and the head was pretty thin. The flavor, as mentioned, was wonderful with some tones of caramel, toffee, nuttiness, and maltiness. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it. Shadallion (526), Sacramento, California, USA

Thick body, chocolate-caramel dopplebock flavors. The oak-aging very obvious, and very welcome. Amazing beer; the best dopplebock not called Celebrator. jdhunt76 (56), Winter Springs, Florida, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 21, 2007 Bottle. A properly named doppelbock! Dark brown pour with copper edges. Huge sweet malty aroma, that reminds of the nose off of a barleywine. Dark malty flavor with raisins, blackberries, caramel, hazelnuts and walnuts. Smooth drinking but with a great lingering finish. Loads of great flavor without heaviness you would expect from such a malt-heavy beer. loweredsixth (942), Fresno, California, USA

The aroma was complex...vanilla, alcohol, wood (oak I assume,) chocolate. The flavor was just as complex...alcohol, roasted wood (if that makes sense,) malty sweet, toffee/caramel. Soft feel...mild carbonation. Outstanding beer! arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 18, 2006 Bottle into Duvel tulip glass one night in the summer of 2005, sitting at the kitchen table in Tajunga, CA, with cquiroga, swilling brews and talking shop. The shop was Fish Tale Detonator Doppelbock, and the consensus was: dope beer. Like barley exhaust wafting from the pipes of a mountain-stream brewery, the aroma funnelled up from the glass, leavened with the malty and oakey smells of delightfully smoky bread. Dark ruby amber glowing hazily in the glass. Head was a meager beige that couldn’t stay alive very long; after it mostly disipated, it left little wispy beige tracings on the surface that made me think of Greek fortune tellers examining coffee grounds (I think there is a market here for telling fortunes in diminished beer foam, we should look into it). Lacing is slow to cascade and sandy in texture. After warming a while (still haven’t tasted it yet), the aroma evokes a peaty whiskey alcohol. Mouthfeel is chewy silky sweet with some alcohol astringency. Flavor starts like a roasty version of Nutella (kind of nutty, kind of chocolate), transitioning into a full dry roast in the finish. Undercurrents of prune and malty fruits are smooth, transition into the finish with tar and tobacco. Oak in this one is a great and subtle addition; it doesn’t dominate, but adds to the fruits and the peat both. A good light sweetness carries througout. My life is better for having tasted this. Good lacing. Aroma is a terrific blend of smoke, molassas and coffee. Taste is reminescient of a Porter. Very little hops. Dark, rich and smokey/charcoal. Feel is rich and heavy and no real bitter at the end.
Didn’t know what to expect on this and it was great. tupalev (2618), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Again, another one Greg brought that I had no idea of how it was rated going in. Surprising amount of hops in aroma, lots of malt and alcohol as well - outstanding. Dark, dark brown, bubbly brown/white head. Great taste! Lots of hops, lots of malt, great tingly mouthfeel. On style, just add a ton of hops. A very very good beer - this one blew me away and is likely one of my highest ratings for the style.
