beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Dec 20, 2007 Deep, dark, nearly blackened blood black with a sliver of amber at the bottom. Great capping that lasts and lasts of densely firm, creamy lightly tanned foam. Actually, it hardly ever moved even while being consumed. Started at about a chubby finger high to reside to a pinky height always present. Tons of lacing in patchy sheeting and some densely populated spotting. Great looking Doppelbock!
Aroma is a bit soft and hesitant to let loose with any real guff of Doppelbockyness. Slight toasted breadyness, old raisins, maple, cocoa, and a peculiar dryness of smokey grasses or grains.
Taste isn’t as malty rich as I would like to see out of a Doppelbock. It starts out more like a beefy brown ale with some dryish breads and grains, cocoa as well puffs about within the mid ranges, some light vanilla, maple, and fruityness touches off the finishing back end with a partial raisin and fig ascent, but is quite short and uncomplexing.
Body is a bit short of medium with more of a drying sense of breads and grains then of rich chewy, gooey, fruity, malts. Again, seems more like a beefy brown ale.
So, even though this didn’t quite live up to what I like out of a Doppelbock, I quite liked it; if it were a brown ale(style wise and being a bit strict and beer snobby here) would be solid. Other than the style seeming off to me, I’d drink a bunch of this no problem. The numbers reflect more of how I felt with the style not matching. The label says its a Doppelbock so...reviewed as so.
drfabulous (686), Columbia, Missouri, USA Aug 13, 2008 Only one Fish Tale was on the shelf at Steve’s in Madison and it was this one. Not my favorite style, I bought it just because it was Fish Tale. No regrets. Sweet, malty, chocolate flavor. Excellent Dopplebock. JK (2392), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Aug 9, 2008 A little bit expensive for what it is, but a good beer for sure. Sweet with caramel, mollassas, and malt. Some chocolate in there as well, but sweet chocolate, not bitter. Also, sugar beets are surprisingly a prominent flavor, whether there are any beers or not I don’t know. I don’t taste the oak. awaisanen (1132), Irvine, California, USA Jul 22, 2008 From a 12oz Bottle. Courtesy of Stine. Mostly transparent, rust tinted chestnut brown colored pour with a thick finger of foamy beige. Malty aromas of milk chocolate and nutty coconut husk, along with hints of flamed raisin and light toast. Mostly clean, with a subdued alcohol presence. Medium full bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a smooth, creamy texture. Flavors of toasted bread and nuts up front on the palate, and grows increasingly roasty toward the finish. Warming alcohol in the final smack, coming across as boozey, spicy oak. The oak is subdued and is well integrated in the beer, but the flavors are biased toward the roast too much, causing that rich munich raisin character that I’m craving to get a bit lost. Thanks, Eben! tronraner (1391), (Louis-, Sevier-, Knox-)ville, Tennessee, USA Jul 21, 2008 Bomber. Pours dark orange-brown with small tan head. The aroma is rich caramel, prune, some sweet chocolate, maple syrup, and a distant Pepsi note. The flavor is ash and caramel with a bit of a smoky feel. There is some bitter chocolate, burning leaves, and some earthy hops. Dry, ashy finish and aftertaste. pantanap (725), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 19, 2008 12oz bottle and i forget who gave/sent this to me but thanks!.....pours a dark and opaque reddish brown with an enormous tan head that took some time to settle....aroma of toast and biscuity malt in addition to sweeter dark fruit and wood.....flavors of dark fruit, roast, and even some hop bitterness but it all seems a bit muddled together. creamy mouthfeel but still felt somewhat thin.
