Commercial Description:
With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Ours a dark cloudy brown. Malty sweet aroma. Sugary caramel taste with some hints of grape. Alcohol finish.

’01 Vintage shared by the incredible OhioDad at C-bus tasting 5. Also the last beer to have the priviledge of making it into my notes...Caramel malt, alcohol, and some vinuous aromas come from a dark brown body. Flavor is the same as the aroma--and very nice--with definite alcohol presence.

2002 bottle. Opaque brown no head. Lots of deep sweet malts with some woody notes. Nice complex dark malts with some nice woody vanilla notes, finishes with some aged bitter hops.

2001 Bottle shared at the Columbus Tasting V, shared by OhioDad: Brown pour with a tan head. Aroma, caramel, toffee, some oak. Flavor, caramel, some earthy hops, oaky, some fruits. Really nice, and still doing quite well.

2001 vintage...once again shared by OhioDad. Thanks Scott. I really enjoyed the other wine barrel aged beer from fish tale, the poseidon, and this one was very good as well. Lots of sugars, fruits, and caramels in the nose. Not much hops to speak of. The taste actually showed some signs of hops. The other flavors really melded well with the wine barrel contributions with dark fruits, and caramel malts. Really enjoyable, and I think it has held up well for being 6 or 7 years old.

Aromas of Caramel, slight chocolate, and bigh pacific northwest hops. Flavor is toffee, caramel, citrus hops, vanilla, and oak. Smooth on the palate and quite a complex barleywine. Enjoyable!

Batch 4, courtesy of Pailhead. Murky medium reddish-brown. Minimal head, fades to film/ring rather quickly. Hige bourbon nose, although the label stated wine barrels. Don’t get any vinous notes whatsoever. Flavor much the same, sour-mash bourbon, with huge oak/woodiness to it. As it warms continues to sour. Tad dissapointed.
