Commercial Description:
With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

RBSG ’05 - a 2000 bottle - more lottery tickets, and another prize, imo, a very sweet fruity aroma, hints of hops, tobacco, and chocolate with a tinge of smoke. pours a cloudy carmel color, and features a sweet caramel malt base, highlighted by lite grassy hops, sweet fruits, a hint of wood, some tobacco and chocolate. all of these are rolled together sublimely into a smooth, velvety rich mouthfeel with no hint of the alcohol and just a fantastic taste left on your tounge. one of the great highlights of the tasting for me.

Pours a murky brown mud. Sweet malty aroma carrying traces of tart fruit, oak, and touches of smoke. Mouthfeel was not pleasant. Granular cruddy sugar mess. Although not balanced the beer had a good character of fruit, wood laden caramel. Once past that, it softened again into a bittersweet wine. But some harshness of alcohol came out in the finish. Most likely past it’s prime but you have to respect the craftmanship.

2005 RSBG - 2000 vintage. Fruity, vineous aroma. Incredibly smooth, fruity, caramelly. Nicely sweet with a vineous backbone. Easy drinking, absolutely delicious.

RBSG Vintage 2000 Average off white head with decent lacing later on as I swirled it to release aromas of caramel and toffee. Well balanced flavor. Moderately sweet with a bit of hops to keep it right. This beer is put together perfectly and one I’ll keep on my wants list in case I should ever be fortunate enough to find a whole bottle. Thanks Jordan for bringing it to the gathering!

RBSG 2005. Vintage 2000 Brown body, small fluffy beige head. (3+) Alcoholic slightly malty aroma. Flavour is quite malty with just a bit of a hoppy bite to it. Medium to full bodied. Notes are lacking, as I was busy being blown away. Thanks for bringing this one Jordan, glad to have won this auction! 100 percent different from the latest batch. Wow.

RBSG05 Batch #2 Bottle. Very vinous and wine-like aroma with sweet malts and bourbon notes in the nose. Hazy amber color with a tan head. Very smooth and slightly vinous flavor with some grapey/wine flavors. Slight alcohol burn to finish. This is nicely done for a barrel-aged beer.

Dirty copper body, minimal off-white head. Aroma is sweet candied wine, wet oak. Taste yields vinous sweet hops. Slight butterscotch, pears, and general yummyness follows.

Batch #4: Pours a murky brown color with an orange glow. The head is minimal, but leaves some attractive lacing. Aroma of caramel, oak, tart grapes and pears. Light notes of brown sugar followed by some dry C hop flavor. The wine notes quickly follow. Dry toasty oak and grape skins that hint at sourness, without actually being sour. Toasted nuts and a dry earthy quality dominate the finish. A unique and delcious experience.
