But as others have noticed there is a strange tartness that will not go away. The alcohol is actually kinda restrained in my bottle (Batch #4, November 2002). Sort of apricot like to me. beerbuzzmontreal (2931), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 13, 2004 Cloudy red and brown color with smallish head. Aroma was huge, with flavors of dried fruit and oak. Taste was very mellow old citrus and strong spicy, warm hops. This was some big flavored stuff. Oak flavors are also everywhere. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 2, 2004 Big malt, oak, vinous, aroma. Burnt marzipan alcohol sweetness in the nose. Notes of orange chocolate and mint. Murky brown colour with off white head that recedes to a swirling cover and ring. Soured red wine and oak underscore a big caramel maltiness with assertive but balanced citrusy hops. Smooth, silky port-like mouthfeel. Full and rich. This I’d go out of my way to find again. Delicious. Bottle (Batch #4 11/02 - enjoyed with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT and Rastacouere). MartinT (5075), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 30, 2004 2002 bottle, kudos to sham It pours a dirty earthy color, brownish orange dirty river alike with a thin off-white head. The aroma is explosive with oaky tones, mint and oranges. Vinous profile jumps to the face, full of grapes, sherry. Palate is fruity (grapes, cherries, bilberries, apples, pears), yeasty (bready particules) with a mild tartness and a wine-like astringence. I know some people dislike it, but I just admire the balance kept and very original character of this beer after aging in oak barrels. It gave it a totally unique flavor profile and it kept most of the lovely barley wine characteristic, complexity included. Rather full body with low carbonation. I need more of this, somehow, but you just owe respect to original quality recipes executed well. Alcoholist (570), Peoria, Illinois, USA
