Enticing dark cloudy red appearance with a fruity, hoppy, wine-like aroma. A very distictive example of the style that contains an array of flavors so nicely blended that one never suspects the 10% abv. An absolute world class brew. JorisPPattyn (5190), Antwerpen, Belgium
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 2, 2003 Hazy dark-brown beer with slim, but quite stable white head. nose is vinous and grapey, but really reminds me of spilled and soured wine. Oak vat, yes, but the vat is on the verge of collapsing. Taste is vinous, woody, Marsalla but less sweet, vintage port. Sourness in a very fruity way - plums, grapes. There is some acetic acid, but remains subdued. Taste is much better than the off-putting nose. Heavy-bodied, oily mouthfeel. Long fruity, but also burning aftertaste. Definitely some acetic. Pity about the nose. The rest is more than decent. EddieG (163), Palos Heights, Illinois, USA

A massive taste explolsin filled with grapes, raisons, dates and plums. Teh color is a beautiful read and poured with virtually no head. Let this one warm over an hour or so and it gets better. Great paplate that lingers for a long while. A world class Barley wine. 2002 Vintage BückDich (4856), McCall, Idaho, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 18, 2003 Deep burgundy color with not too much head (expected at this ABV). Lacing stayed around to say hi though. Aroma is rich with dark fruits and hops, malt notes follow up the background very simply. Flavor is slightly cloying and alcohol is detectable. More of the yeast and hops are detectable in the flavor. Finishes very easy drinking, doesn't linger and choke you like some barleywines. The casks they use on Fish Tale's signature series of beers give them all a slight cherry oak flavor which is very good and unique and makes them age PERFECTLY. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA

aroma of candied fruit. Slightly sour fruit flavors that finishes with a
small alcohol bite. A smooth palate. Such a nice barleywine. Andrew196 (1091), Katy, Texas, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 1, 2003 Another well made barleywine! Aroma of fresh hops and caramel, but what struck me most about the nose of this beer was the distinctive whiskey notes I got out of it.....very nice! Color was dark red with a cream colored head. Taste of yeast, apples, berries, alcohol.....all meshed together in this rich, yet mellow treat. Thanks Nate! joet (1709), Fulton, California, USA

Had long held it to be within drawn lines and when one fell out it might be disqualified. What nonsense. This wasn't shocking, but I had the hardest time pulling out what I was tasting. Just the wildest flavor. Very enjoyable. Much more akin to what I think of finding in many Belgian offerings than an American barleywine. After tasting so many others I would love to drink a whole bottle of this leading to the ensuing coma. WOW.
