Commercial Description:
With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

2008 GABF, Dr. Bill’s tasting, Batch 3. Pours clear tawny with a small, fizzy, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, caramel, toffee), average hops (flowers, perfume), average yeast (dough) with notes of alcohol, apple, and pear. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Big thanks to Mike for sharing this big bottle. 2001 bottling. Dark brown appearance with a fluffy tan head. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, and spice come through. Flavor is sweet, caramely, brown sugar, and no lasting bitterness. Palate is sticky and big.

Very large bottle from 2001, shared by acrdz at the Shenandoah Beer Throwdown. Pours dark brown, very hazy, tan head. Aroma is sweet caramel, some subtle hops. Flavor is similar, with smoke, dark fruit, grapefruit, and warming alcohol in taste. Excellent, and very smooth.

2001 3 Liter bottle shared by acrdz. Thanks Mike! Wow, this was a treat. I didn’t write any tasting notes down for this one because I was enjoying it so much. Only a bit oxidized with very nice brown sugar, caramel, and dark fruit flavors. Alcohol well hidden. This was probably the best barleywine I’ve had, second only to Midnight Sun M.

WOW!! Sampled at the merrit Island Throwdown courtesy of Oakes, thanx Josh! Where do I start. The pour is beautiful brownish copper color with a thin lacing white head. The nose is sweet, caramel like with hints of the dark fruits. Flavor is well balanced. The dark fruits, caramel, oak and slight alcohol warmth are a great blend. This finished off slightly swet with some woodiness.

750ml bottle (2001 vintage) thanks to Todd! poured a solid dark caramel brown with a thinnish slightly off-white head..... nose made up of aged sweet caramel malt, dark fruit, and some maple. malts have faded and was difficult to detect the fact that it was aged in a cab-franc bottle. somewhat vinous but again, hardly noticeable..... smooth ccaramael malt flavors that were slightly oxidized with some subtle light sourness. mouthfeel was creamy and full and had low carbonation with worked well for it..... pretty good but a little past its prime.
