Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Leviathan BW Reel Ale-12oz bottle-pours a tan head and copper color. Aroma is medium malt-caramel, spice/herbal/pine hops. Taste is medium malt-caramel, spice/herbal/pine/metallic (English) hops, rye. Medium body. Dry. Well done, interesting interpretation of a style that’s not my type.

Red orange pour. Aroma of vanilla, raisin, pear, and citrus hops. Hop forward flavor, with some pine and a surprisingly dry finish. Not as full flavored which is preferred, but the aroma on this beast is absolutely divine. This is good, but at around $5 for a 12 oz bottle, there are other barleywines I’d recommend that are cheaper and more full bodied.

Thanks to Naven, we got to drink this monster while watching the Vikings tattoo some serious numbers onto the foreheads of the San Diego Stupor Chargers. Rich, boozy and quite sweet. Very delicious. I liked this barley wine quite a bit.

22 oz bottle. I picked this up at Bottleworks in Seattle several months ago. This pours a nice dark amber color, and has a great aroma of hops and caramel. The carbonation was there, but it was similar to a cask beer, actually. Pretty good.

Poured dark amber with no head. Nose of fruit and sweet malt. Good sweet malt character with some fruit hints. Very smooth for 10%.

(bottle - 22 oz: 2006 vintage) Clear copper color with little carbonation and no head. Aroma is light. Mostly hops with some light caramel notes underneath. Flavor begins slightly bitter with a smooth sweetness in the middle and a very bitter and floral finish. Aftertaste lingers on the palate and leaves some burnt coffee taste.

[Bottle, I believe 1 year old] Pours deep reddish-amber with a small head. Aroma is mostly hops, with a little bit of malt. Taste is slightly bitter up front, then mostly malt and hops. Maybe a case of thinking I taste something after reading it, but after seeing the commercial description I definitely was able to recognize the pear and nuts also in the finish. Quite thick. Somewhat dry finish, which normally isn’t my thing, but works here. This isn’t too bad, but could definitely use some more age.
