Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

(bottle) Pours dark amber with no head. Aroma is very hoppy, quite piney with a little bit of sweet malt. Sweet caramel malt flavor with a llingering finish of bitter hops. Medium body, not too bad, very similar to an IPA.

Bottle. Don’t know what happened to the rating but thanks to mcbackus for the trade. Poured a deep brown red body with nice head. Aroma is of caramel, malt and a nice sweet nose. Flavor was lightly hoppy, caramel notes and sweet malt. One of my favorite American barley wines.

Solid malt and hop nose. Brown body with hoppy body. Dry finish. For a young barleywine, very approachable.

Copper color with a thin head. Aroma is something like a caramelly hop. Ditto in the flavor, which gives it a distinctive bittersweet taste. The citrus hop meshing with caramel, nut and vanilla doesn’t do it much for me, but I’m sure after a couple years, this would be damn near perfect.

An excellent aroma of dried fruit not much hops at all on the nose. A deep amber pour that is surprises me how clean the pour is. A flavor that is loaded with dried fruit with a pretty decent bitter for a beer this old. A bit of warmth but not over powering. Very solid carbonation and mouthfeel. A surprise in the bitter. I hate to say that I did not know that this beer was this old until I opened it. A very special beer. My favorite style and a pretty damn good offering.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a small off-white head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing. Aroma of caramel, light roasted malt, and light citrus hops. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of roasted nuts. Medium moutheel with soft carbonation and mild bitterness for a BW. Very good.
