Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a small off-white head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing. Aroma of caramel, light roasted malt, and light citrus hops. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of roasted nuts. Medium moutheel with soft carbonation and mild bitterness for a BW. Very good.

12 oz - Dark coppery crimson, creamy off white head. Nose held notes of musty caramelized toffee brittle and orange marmalade, with softer nutty fig notes expanding out on further warming. Flavor is a more subdued, yet it still had some nice complexity. Balanced fruity hops and nutty caramel malt slickly roll with just a late touch of chocolate. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, lightly bittersweet finish. This was fine, but it could never top the barrel aged version...

22 oz, "Barleywine Reel Ale" on label.... Nice brown/ruby color, not much head. Deep toffee malts, smoked scents.... roasted nuts, figs and chocolate aromas are bouyed well by a distant yet pervasive floral hop presence. The taste is expressed at first through toasted chocolate & mocha themes that evolve into dirty coffee/toffe flavors which further yield a woody hoppy dryness. A multi-layered and well balanced brew.

The Dan Journal #101. Tasted 8/8/07. 22oz bottle. Hazy with a murky brown hue. Moldy off-white head. Smokey toffee nose. Caramel and apple cider vinegar. Very easy and smooth Barley Wine. Toasty malts and citrus hops. Nice rye acidity. Nice.

copper/brown-ish color, clear, head is thin, beige. aroma is very grainy, malty with moderate citrus notes and a weird fruitiness. Flavor is moderately bitter, mild hints of citrus, slight alcohol on the tongue, but otherwise, very much hidden. flavor is a bit perfumey with a chocolate hint in the finish. eh.

Bottle. Clear orange color with a small head. Aroma of caramel and other sweet malts. Taste is citrusy/orange with caramel, vanilla and pear.. For 10%, the alcohol is very well hidden. Finishes bitter and dry. Tasty, but probably not $4/bottle tasty.

Pours cloudy orange. Aroma is sweet malt, fruit, and brown sugar. Flavor is malt, smoke, sugar, and fruit. The barrel aged version is light years better than this.

Label says Reel Ale.Pours a light copper color with a small white head.Malts and hops with some sweetness flowing on the nose. Definately a hop presence here. Lots of hop flavor here.Finish was bitter and clinged to the back of my throat
