Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Had this right after the Poseidon’s and, "wow" - I’d swear this was from a completely different brewery! What happened here? Not very well done and it seems like the intent was just to toss a bunch of malt and hops together and shoot for a huge amount of alcohol and body. Well, they got a big body and considerable alcohol, but at the cost of a high amount of fusels and some cloying character. Maybe I’ll have to re-rate this again as opinions widely differ on this one.

Draft. Rich caramel color with a nice off-white head. Big, rich caramel aroma with some vanilla. Caramel, vanilla flavor - but doesn’t match the aroma. Lighter than expected body. Hides alcohol well. Lingering caramel, vanilla, and slight hop.

One of the best smelling brews I’ve come across. Sherry and pear and lack of carbonation stand out. Very good and smooth but a touch too sweet.

22 oz bottle, 2006 vintage, via acertain. Pours a clear dark copper colored body under a smallish very short lived beige head. No lacing at all. The aroma is thick caramel and toffee maltiness with a resinous hoppiness. Moderate alcohol. The flavor really caught me off guard. Alot of smokiness on first impression. The malt is heavy, but minimal sweetness or toffee flavors. Kinda dry with almost a nutty and toasted maltiness up front with a finish that’s laced with smoke and alcohol, moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is full bodied but no stickiness up front and just the slightest amount on the finish. Nice fine, soft carbonation. Quite unusual for a Barley Wine, but pretty enjoyable.

12 oz bottle placed next to the BA version. Orange malt color with a beige head. Cookie aroma, sweet malt, alcohol, yeast and carmel. Medium bodied sweet malt, cherries, oak, carmel, citrus, bitter. I could definitely tell this was the same beer as the BA, although the BA takes it to another level, this is still pretty tasty.

12oz bottle, thanks to holdenn for this sample. tasted this next to BA Leviathan! pours pretty hazy orange with little head. nose has some nice ripe fruits, soft caramel notes. finish is dry, roasty, with well hidden alcohol. tasty stuff.

Had this one in the basement aobut 9 months and needed something special tonight. I smell hops, pine trees, powdered sugar. the color of maple syrup, thin ephemeral head. nicely aromatic in the mouth with a little carbonation. resin & burnt sugar, a backwash of honey & whiskey. the alcohol doesn’t hide. finely balance, smooth & clean with a subtle finish.

On tap at BPP. Dark fruit and maple syrup in the aroma. Caramel, dark fruit and a bit of hops in the taste. Good, but not great.
