Pours a very rich dark brown with a solid, dense, cream colored head. Aromas of bitter cherry, very dark roasted malt, baker’s chocolate and some red wine. Taste is very smooth and has a good sweet and full malty mouthfeel, with the alcohol well hidden. Hoppy aftertaste. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 3, 2006 Thanks to Degarth for this one. Pours a medium cloudy amber with a faint head. A nice malty aroma with a faint citrus (sour) smell. I tasted the alcohol right away but it wasn’t distracting. Flavor is sweet malts and also has a hoppy finish. Very nice. pintbypint (1010), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 2, 2006 Updated: Dec 15, 2007650ml brown bottle. Pours deep orange red, head is tan coloured, good retention, creamy consistancy, lots of splotchy lacing. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel, slightly fruity with light rummy alcohol in the background. Full mouthfeel, light carbonation. Sweet malty start, again brown sugary, toffee, and slight berry fruitiness. Finishes with mild hop bitterness, citrusy/grapefruit aftertaste lingers, along with light alcohol notes. awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 10, 2006 From a 22oz Bottle. Pours a deep, ruddy, mahogany brown with a tall serving of off-white head. Raisiny, spicy malt aromas accompany some brown sugar and maple syrup. I feel like ’m sensing a bit of soapy yeast character as well, but that just leaves me feeling a bit confused. Full bodied, somewhat syrupy mouthfeel. The malty flavors bring out some nice brown sugar, maple syrup, and caramel notes, but there is an underlying booziness that detracts from the flavor character. Tasty overall, but a bit too hot and heavy on the sherry character for my liking. iowaherkeye (1860), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Oct 19, 2006 12oz, no date. Pours a hazy reddish orange with a tiny beige head. Aroma of maple syrup, wood, smoked peat, some vinous notes, fairly alcoholic. Taste isn’t as sweet as the aroma led on and alcoholic--way too alcoholic for being 10%. The only other flavors I pick up on are the peated malt, and a tiny amount of wood. Other than that--alcohol. Smooth body, light carbonation. Chalky bitter dry alcoholic finish. The taste is not good. Meh, not that great of a beer. The 3.1 maybe a little high. presario (2996), Calgary, Alberta, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 15, 2006 Vintage 2006. Almost no head in first half of bottle, but full frothy topping in the bottom half. Hazy dark orange-brown. Aroma of hops rises up but if you look deeper the alcohol conquers all. Some syrupy notes, thin on spice. Hops are very present in finish and after swallowing. Nice drinking. Sherry notes, maybe a trace of nuts. Somewhat subdued. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 9, 2006 This comes across like a bock on steroids! Cloudy orange amber, yellow-tan head. Big caramel and butterscotch aromas, lead the way into a sweet palate dominated by the same flavours, with a woody undertone. The sweetness is undercut by a nice bitter finish. The alcohol is surprisingly well integrated and remains fairly hidden, until you stand up. I’m generally not a fan of barley wine, but I thought this one was not bad. erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 8, 2006 Pours a fairly clear deep auburn with a loose but lasting white head. Aroma is deep crystal malts and light notes of figs and other dried fruits. The body is rather sweet and med. The flavors are exceedingly smooth. Lots of layered malts and a floral hop character, but nothing really stands out to make it a singularly enjoyable beverage. As it warms, notes of cinnamon make a surprise appearance. The finish has a light dryness from the bittering hops. Maybe there was too much sugar used and maybe to much yeast was pitched. Either way, this lacks a real depth of character. Not a bad barleywine, just nothing to howl about.
