Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

The aroma is very malty with alcohol and a faint hint of smoke. The appearance is orange/brown with a medium head. The flavor has caramel, dark fruit, and peat. The palate is ok for a Barleywine. I like it.

Deep, Dark rich tastes of everything that makes Barleywines great. A rich taste of caramel, dark fruits, and peat. Thick and flavorful.

This one rocked. I need some of the BA version. Great apple and pear aromas from the hops. Slightly musty smells as well. Alcohol is hardly noticeable. Sugary sweet aftertaste. A little caramel taste. Very smooth and good.

Bottle courtesy of hopdog. A great barley wine. Not overly sweet or bitter like some barley wines. Clean, crisp, oaky, malty flavor w/ a dry, hoppy finish. Great beer.

Dark orange/copper color with very little head. Aroma is malty and piney, but not intense, which is okay. Flavor is moderately hoppy, but lays well over the maltiness, finishes dry along with warmth from the alcohol. A good BW, doesn’t try to be in-your-face.

Bottle (12oz). via trade with jerc. Batch No. 5 Bottled November 2004. Hazy light ruby with an average creamy straw-coloured head. Aroma of candyish malt, alcohol, wood, tart fruit and yeast, dry hops on warming. The taste is very unusual - nowhere near as sweet as the aroma - quite bitter, very strong alcohol, salty and heavy with tannins, spicy and bitter hop finish. Decent body, nice carbonation, good woody astringency, nice shifty complex finish. Very nice.

A hazy amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of both caramel and the alcohol. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel, and towards the end notes of wood grows on You, making the end dry. The alcohol also makes its presence know towards the end.

Bottle. Cloudy amber colour with a little head. Nice sweet aroma of heavy caramel and Americans hops. Also in the flavour, but ends up very alcoholic.
