Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Cloudy orange amber in color. Smells very fruity. Tastes of sweet fruits, hints of alcohol and bitterness at the end. Body filled up with warmth with every sip but didnt last that long.

) This beer introduces itself with a healthy aroma consisting of malt and oak. It is a rusty brown solution with a glaze of a off-white head and good lacing. This thick rich beer deposits a flavor of oak and malt on the palate. As it is leaving the mouth, the sweet tastes of molasses and toffee can be detected. The aftertaste is a sweet malt taste that lingers well.

Strong hops, grapefruit peel and sawdust along with rich caramel malts. Sweet thick malts up front with toffee candy stickiness. Bracingly bitter from the middle on through to the aftertaste with alcohol becoming more noticeable at the tail. Thick feel, as expected from the style. I’d like to lay a few of these down for a year or three. Thank you Buckdich!

Bottle: Poured a hazy amber with a brownish tint to it, with very little white head. Nose of citrus hops, malt, and hints of the alcohol. Tasted of citrus, low amount of maltiness, some hops, and a nice bitterness. It went down nicely, with a soft quality to it. Nice warming affect. <P> Rerate, Bottle (2006) in 2/08: Pours a muddy brown amber with a medium beige head. Nose is dark fruits, caramel, and brown sugar. Very sweet and inviting. Flavor retains sweetness of aroma and adds a bit of citrus hops. Retains plenty of vinous fruits, caramel, sugars, and meshs together well. Thanks BuckeyeBoy for bringing this!

Dark, hazy brownish amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty with a bit of sweet fruits. Malty sweet flavor with a strong, alcoholic astringence and hops making themselves more pronounced at the end. Not the best barleywine that I’ve had but it’s still good.

12 oz bottle, thanks FlySwatter! Dark amber and orange color, fairly clear. Small head that doesn’t stick around too long. The aroma doesn’t have much hops, some medicinal and band-aid phenolics. Two things stick out in the flavor: smoke and malt. The alcohol is pretty heavy, too. The smoky flavor is the best thing about this beer but it might need some age. No rauchmalt according to the description? Pretty surprising. Good beer.
