Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

12oz bottle, "Batch 5 Bottled November 2004."
Pours slighty hazy auburn with thin, off-white head. Aroma is huge sweet malt, wine and restrained hops. Big sweet malt flavor, a pleasant touch of woody smoke, medium tell-tale Cascade hop floral/pine and medium but slightly astringent hop bitterness. Thick, oily, flat palate. Pretty good for a West Coast barleywine.

From batch #5, bottled in 11/2005. Served at 55F in my worthy glass. Appearance is dark amber-red with lots of little floatie about the size of pieces of sand. Inch tall, off-white head that thins, but sticks around. First thing I notice in the flavor is a charcoal smokiness. That changes to some notes of cardboard (oxydation?), but it doesn’t really take much away in this. Very malty, just a slight hop bitterness and some minerals in the warming finish. Medium-full body with a sweet, chalky finish.

Batch 5, Bottled November 2004
Aroma of pine wood and citrus orange. Body was dark orange with small off white head. Flavor was full bodied from the start. Hard to decribe it was good. Like a syrupy citrus and cherry flavor. Smooth with mild sweetness of citrus on the palate. Good brew.

Sampled at Argo and Kathy’s ’05 Holiday Gathering. Pours clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma of kilned malts and woodiness. Flavor has notes of raisin, plum, toasted malts, wood, molasses and brown sugar. Pleasantly sweet with a hop presence to round it out. Full, round and creamy on the palate. Not the best barleywine but enjoyable.

Bottle... A&K’s4thAHBT... This beer rocks!... Clear, orange ale with a small, fizzy, rusty-off-white head. The aroma is rich and malty with notes of toffee, caramel, apricot and vanilla. Toffee and caramel dominate the flavor. There are lesser flavors of sourmash and black cherries. Full-bodied and fizzy. Finishes alcoholic and warming. Excellent beer! Not quite as enjoyable as the oak aged version, but wonderful nonetheless!

Bottle: Clear amber body with a small beige head. Aroma is floral and grassy hops. Taste is dry hops, sweet pale malt, fruit, and yeast. This tasted more like a strong pale ale than a barleywine, though I’m not really sure that means looking back over my notes. I guess it means that it probably wasn’t as full-bodied and heavy as the average barleywine.

(12oz bottle, batch 5) Clear amber body topped by a small beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, moderately sweet, pine, caramel, light mint. Taste is medium sweet, pine/grapefruit, caramel, faint nuts. Smooth medium-full body with some chewiness, alcohol well hidden.

BW tasting at Dumdum’s, Late March 2005. Red orange ale with copper hues, and a good off-white head. Light sweet aroma of malt, alcohol, and light spices. Fire water with malts and good hops, but all is in your face, unidimensional. Body is thinner than expected. Thanks Cap.
