Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

12 oz bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a small off-white head that soon fades to a thin film. The nose shows caramel, roasted malts and cascade hops. The flavor pretty much mimics the aroma--no big surprises. The mouthfeel is smooth and full. The finish is long and biter with lingering hops and some cherries. Overall: This is a very good barleywine--very sessionable. Recommended.

12 oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. Possessed a strong malty nose as well as a profile of undeniable hops. The ale was viewed as a burnt orange with a gentle development of head that flat lined like a heart rate monitor. The flavor was a sweet yet roasted flavor of malt and notes of caramel but the hops I had detected in the nose had been depleted.

BIg thanks to my friend in Washington who dropped this in my lap over a year ago. Anyways onto the beer...

2006 Vintage -- I love Barleywines, a nice clear light mahogony body that has a quickly dissapearing ivory head. Aroma of sweet peet and malt, with a slight spice/hop accent. Taste is somewhat malty, with an interesting sweet spice overlay. Ending is a spice aromatic. Very tasty.

Nov 2005 bottling. Clear amber with a 2" head. Nice fruit and caramel nose with a hint of musk and floral hops. Taste is caramel sweet up front dates, figs and a very smooth mouthfeel. Finishes with a mild spicy hop alcohol bitterness. Complex subtle flavors here, taste more like an aged barleywine. 21806

12 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a half finger thick off white head. Very light lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, vinous, and esters. Flavor is lightly sweetened toasted malt and esters. Mouthfeel is watery. Light to medium body. A good beer, just needs more body.

Bottle from Santa. Turbid burnt umber pour with khaki head. Aroma is caramel malt, figgy fruit, funky earthy peaty hops. Tastes a bit tart, with a solid dark fruit element, plus solid hops, and some fermented figgy fruit. The palate is complex, but waters out a bit late, and stays rather tart. The complexity is notable but not on par with the world class BWs. Still, this is a great beer from one of my all time favorite brewers.

Picked up single 12-oz bottle from Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a clear coppery amber brew with a good sized off-whtie head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and thick white ring. Aroma has plenty of citrus zest, some raisin, caramel malt, and a touch of chocolate. Taste is slightly tart, medium bodied, some carbonation with flavors of tart citrus a touch of caramel malt and plenty of alcohol warmth. Finish is semi-dry and light bitterness with a lingering mild bitter aftertaste that has some citrus flavor remaining.
