Commercial Description:
Old Woody has been brewed in the style of English Old Ales. We have aged this beer in oak wine casks for six months before bottling it. Old Woody will age well for several years if stored in a cool dark cellar. Serve only lightly chilled, with a strong cheese and a hearty loaf of bread.

Bottle courtesy of jayg (thanks!). Poured a medium brown shade with some off-white head. Aroma was very sweet, full of caramel, toffee, and maybe some raisins or figs. Taste is mostly the same; very sweet on the tongue with the toffee taste in the forefront. Some dark fruit comes out slightly. Pretty sticky mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours a medium amber with light brown head. Aroma was sweet and malty. The flavor was also very sweet and I detected a hint of chocolate and maybe a little booziness as well. Overall an enjoyable beer that I would drink again if I was in a sweet mood.

Bottle. Thanks to Santa for sending me this one. Pours a cloudy dull brown body with thin head. aroma is sweet malt, wood, toffee and caramel. Flavor is slightly nutty, toffee notes with some dried fruit. Sticky mouthfeel and very silky taste with some smokiness to it. I need to get some more of this.

12/09/2007: Fish Tale Old Woody English Old Ale has a deep, rich ruby-honey color with a dense, long-lasting dark beige head. The corbonation is really fine and has a golden shimmer to it as it slowly rises to the surface. The aroma is quite intense with lots of richness and complexity including caramelized malt, hints of chocoate, vanilla, oak, and some alcohol. The flavor is also quite complex and very interesting. Caramel maltiness and aged fruits dominate the flavor and provide the majority of the sweetness. Other flavors include some dry wood/oak, a touch of spice, well-cellared vineous notes, alcohol-soaked raisins, and some hints of dark chocolate. Some bitterness grows through the finish along with some tobacco flavors which linger on the tastebuds and offer a perfect balance to the sweet matliness of this beer. The alcohol is surprisingly absent in the flavor. The mouthfeel is extremely smooth and mellow. It goes down remarkably quick and soft for such a high alcohol and full-bodied brew. This in an exceptional Old Ale and one of the best I’ve had...

22 fl.oz./650 ML. bottle (9.5% alc./vol.) from trade with bitbucket in November 2006. Thanks Bob! Rating #228 for this beer...

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a one finger off-white head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, citrus, and a hint of oak. Taste is the same as aroma with the oak being a little more prominent and a touch of vinous notes on the finish. Medium full mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and warm but never hot alcohol. Very good.

Richmond "industry" gathering. Medium amber with a hint of orange. Aroma was caramel and a hint of orange. Flavor was caramel, blood orange, some spice, and faint anise. Not catching any wood notes, but this is nice.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a thin off-white head on top. The head disappears quickly leaving slight lacing. Aroma is caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits. Flavor is oak, dark fruits, and caramel. The alcohol is pretty noticeable in this making it a definite sipper. On the palate the beer is syrupy and boozy. A pretty interesting beer all around but I’ll have to revisit it I think.

Badgerben’s Cellar Reduction night. Dark brown body with faint head. Dark fruits and caramel malt on the aroma. Similar body with a definite sweetness.
