The aroma is fairly vinous and creates an almost whiskey-like aroma from the malt and alcohol. The barleywine like fruitiness also adds to the impression of strength, without any actual alcohol flavors. The wine in the flavor is actually a little off-putting to me, but it’s a complex beer that deserves a try. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA

Initial impression on the tongue is of smoke. Rich and thick and malty. Good wood character. Quite nice. Suttree (2742), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Musty, fruity winey aroma, with a whiff of tobacco. Port and earthy hops, nicely bitter. Unique flavors of walnuts, maybe even mushroom, and smoke. Nice brew! SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA

Old woody was preceded by some big powerful beers during our mini-tasting and still it held it’s own, in part to having a very similar flavor and aroma profile. Brown color with a smallish head as is characteristic on many high alcohol beers. Complex aroma with some caramel, cherry and toffee. The sweetness is well balanced with an earthy hop character that puts it all together. Old Ale or Barleywine? This one travels back and forth across these two style categories. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 8, 2004 Poured a murky dark reddish brown with a very small off-white head. Strong sweet malty aroma. Taste is very, very sweet with only a mild roasty hop kick in the finish, with some alcohol character. Full mouthfeel. A flavorful and unique sipping beer. ChazyRPh (571), Chazy, New York, USA

Brown sugar malty aroma. Initial sweetness, then alcohol warmth, then roasty maltiness. A little too boozy for my liking. fly (1333), austin, Tejas, USA

Took nearly half the bottle for me to statr appreciating this to a higher degree. Enjoyable, but unless my pallet has a major alteration, this will never be a fave. unclebleen (620), California, USA
